PAG Launches Linking Gold Mount Battery at NAB

LONDON—11 March 2014—At NAB 2014, PAG, one of the broadcast industry’s longest established global providers of innovative portable power solutions, will launch its new Gold Mount® (3-Stud Snap-On®) compatible, high-current, PAGlink battery, a replacement for all Anton/Bauer® Li-Ion batteries. The new battery will be showcased by Manios Digital & Film, Stand C9539.

“PAGlink is the first truly digital linking battery system,” says PAG Sales Director Nigel Gardiner. “It offers more power, more functional benefits and more technological advances than any other system.”

The smaller and lighter PAGlink HC-PL94T Li-Ion battery is compatible with Gold Mount camera plates and Anton/Bauer Li-Ion chargers; there is no need to change either in order to benefit from the many advantages of these new, revolutionary intelligent-linking batteries.

PAGBatTwo or more PAGlink batteries, in any state of charge, can be linked, combining their capacities and enabling a higher current to be drawn. Up to 12A can be supplied for power hungry camera set-ups with multiple accessories. Individual high-current PAGlink packs are capable of 10A alone. Two linked packs provide longer run-time than two single packs used consecutively. PAGlink also allows batteries to be hot-swapped for continuous power. (International patents have been applied for PAGlink.)

PAGlink was designed so that flight-friendly 94 watt-hour battery units can be linked to create a high-capacity Li-Ion power source on location. Linking two HC-PL94T packs creates an 188Wh battery. Although Li-Ion batteries with capacities greater than 160 watt-hours are banned from passenger flights, 94Wh PAGlink batteries—which are UN certified and embody unsurpassed safety features—are allowed in unlimited quantity.
Uniquely, up to four PAGlink batteries can be linked for charging on AB Li-Ion chargers, effectively resulting in a 16-channel unit. That results in less battery swapping and a need for fewer chargers. PAGlink batteries display their individual status during charging. PAGlink allows up to eight batteries to be linked in total for charge or discharge.

“Intelligent PAGlink batteries form a network when linked, allowing them to communicate with each other and manage output safely and efficiently,” notes Gardiner. “It also enables them to communicate automatically with the camera data system that allows Anton/Bauer batteries to display their remaining capacity in the camera viewfinder/LCD. PAGlink is the right battery for today’s increasingly computerized cameras. It makes other battery systems seem crude by comparison.”

PAGChgThe PAGlink HC-PL94T battery incorporates a convenient numeric display that, with two button presses on-load, shows remaining camera run-time in hours and minutes. The display maintains accuracy by tracking cell-performance and adjusting calibration values to compensate for cell-aging. When batteries are linked, the run-time figure given is for the entire stack, but a single button press shows individual battery capacity as a percentage.

Mo-Sys gives movie camera operators new tools for precise control of new generation camera gimbals with the new Drone-Bar

Spectacular aerial cinematography got much better in the past two years, as more and more directors and DOP’s have discovered the potential of radio controlled drones as camera platforms. ‘Copters carrying an under-slung gyro-stabilized gimbal to mount a range of cameras, challenge traditional  helicopters and camera cranes on price and can produce unique, stunning shots impossible with either..  Gimbals are also being mounted in small, light, hand-held units, taking the camera on a journey never before seen with body mounted Steadicams.

The radio controlled gimbal gives the camera its pan, tilt and roll movement, but controlling these has until now been awkward for operators used to working with film equipment such as fluid heads or geared heads with wheels. Gimbals on drones are usually operated with controllers more appropriate for model aircraft enthusiasts and just don’t have the precision and smooth operation film camera operators are used to and expect.

Now Mo-Sys Technologies, creators of the world renown Lamda head, recently used on Life of PI and Gravity, have applied their specialist expertise in remote camera control systems to give operators the same smooth, precise control over the latest generation of camera gimbals. The Drone-Bar was designed by Mo-Sys Technologies in collaboration with Cartoni, renown for their fluid drag technology which gives the pan bar a very professional feel.

The Drone-Bar looks like a regular pan and tilt fluid head, but with a HD monitor where the camera would go.  It is an adjustable, fluid damped head with the finest movement in any direction captured by high resolution, precision encoders and sent direct to the gimbal via the on-board transmitter.  Adjustable smoothing ensures zero jerkiness throughout the camera movement. Soft stops can be set to restrict the camera movement to avoid for example getting propellers or landing gear of ‘copters in the frame. Adjustable ramping allows smooth deceleration towards the soft stops.

The Drone-Bar can also be used with gimbals mounted in hand held units. This is the revolutionary concept of a small camera mounted in a lightweight unit easily carried in one hand by one operator, while a second operator controls the pan and tilt with the Drone-Bar.

Rock steady pictures with the freedom to go anywhere and an unlimited range of movement open up a new world of easily achievable, stunning visuals at a fraction of the cost of other hand held systems. Just pick it up and shoot!

The Drone-Bar is compatible with most radio-controlled gimbals including the MōVI from Freefly, and is supplied with a compatible transmitter. Mo-Sys Technologies will also soon release its hand-wheel technology for the use with remote camera gimbals.

Mo-Sys announces the Exim Head, the high capacity Gyro-Stabilized head with the feather-like touch

Mo-Sys’ family of precision products for film production are designed and built to give directors and DOP’s the tools to create new and imaginative imagery. Our remote controlled heads have been used on many major feature films including recently Life of Pi and Gravity, and are preferred by camera operators and grips for their strength, responsiveness and immediacy.

Our latest addition is the  Exim G60 designed in response to operator’s demands for a high load capacity head perfect for gyro stabilization and maintains Mo-Sys’ reputation as manufacturers of high precision, responsive remote heads.

The heavy duty Exim G60 is gyro-stabilized with zero backlash and ultra-responsive drive units. It features large through-holes in the centre of each drive unit eliminating the need for slip rings. Designed with heavyweight camera packages in mind, the cradle is adjustable to carry all regularly used cameras up to a maximum payload of 60 kg making it perfect for 3D rigs and Imax cameras. The design of the cradle also makes it possible to pan left and right, even with the camera pointing directly downwards.

The Exim G60 is controlled with its highly intuitive touch screen console and with traditional pan bar, joy stick or hand-wheels inputs. Motion data can be exported for use in VFX post-production and for pre-vis compositing with Mo-Sys’ on-set compositing system Genie. The Exim G60 also features recordable and repeatable camera moves as standard.

The Exim G60 is a first fully digital high capacity gyro-stabilized head you can buy.

Ianiro announces its new Gulliver light

Ianiro’s new portable and fully dimmable Gulliver LED is a small 40W unit available in AC or DC versions. With the same diminutive proportions as the classic halogen light, the new Gulliver offers all the advantages of LED technology.

“With this new unit, we have delivered a product that does not fall into the usual LED traps. It’s designed to perform to a high level over its entire lifespan and to maintain a consistent output throughout a shoot, with no change in color response,” said Fabrizia Ianiro.

Gulliver LED is designed for use in small studios and on location. As such, it is lightweight and durable making it suitable for news and documentary reporters.

The small size of the unit posed particular challenges to the design team. To keep operating temperatures at acceptable levels, the casing was designed as a radiator, with near-invisible vents throughout. The internal heat sink was made to measure from anti-corrosion aluminum, very different from an ordinary commercial extruded component. The aluminum casing was optimized to facilitate heat dispersion.

The same attention to focus is evident with the mirrors, which are printed on ultra-pure time-tested aluminum by a German company, which is a leader in the field. For Gulliver, as with all Ianiro products, a special diffusing finish is made with great precision to give the light the right balance between softness and high luminance.

This emphasis on quality engineering extends to the choice of individual LEDs, which are carefully selected and calibrated for professional television applications. The bulb arrangement and internal circuitry was also specified by Ianiro’s research and development team in order to ensure suitability for professional video use.

“Because of our precise LED arrays and custom-designed heatsinks”, notes Fabrizia Ianiro, “the dreaded color shift (LED color deviation) is not an issue. These factors, plus LED bulb quality, means that the unit has excellent heat dissipation.
This makes a real difference compared to standard products.” Gulliver LED is compatible with all existing accessories and is available from authorised resellers now.

Ianiro announces a major addition to its LED line up with the arrival of the red head-style Varibeam LED

The red head has been the mainstay fixture for lighting interviews in the studio and in the field. Three units can easily pack into a shoulder bag, allowing high quality multi-point lighting to be set up quickly in any location. With dimmers,  cost-effective filters, soft boxes and reflectors, crews have enjoyed complete control and great results from portable red head lights for decades.

Despite concerns over heat and power requirements, traditional red heads have remained highly popular, with newer lighting technologies struggling to truly replace tungsten’s bright output and excellent colour characteristics. Now, Ianiro delivers a real alternative, with the launch of the 7000 Varibeam LED series.

Critically, Varibeam Led provides an excellent light source, with a CQS suitable to film shooting. Fabrizia Ianiro remarked:

“The Ianiro tungsten red head is famous: the range goes back to the 1960s so we were not willing to tarnish the reputation of the company by releasing immature LED technology. With the Varibeam LED, there’s no compromise whatsoever; the photometrics are quite outstanding. The light output is phenomenal delivering up-to 1388 lux at 2 metres while the dimmer operates with virtually no colour shift at all.”

These new redhead units deliver the distinctive compact design and traditional light weight build, as well as all the usual benefits of red head lights. They also embrace energy saving, thanks to a high-efficiency, exclusive long-life LED array and a special heatsink, customized by Ianiro to exploit the limited space inside the casing. The units incorporate an extra-pure, uniformly calibrated aluminum mirror, tailored for use with LEDs. Ianiro’s attention to details means that the light’s performance is indistinguishable from a tungsten unit.

“The LED is not just more comfortable for the talent under the light but is easier for the crew to use: it’s cooler, more economical and more durable. With standard AC and 12v DC units available, we can also give producers more flexibility than
ever.” Said Fabrizia.

Radiant Images to Unveil Novo 2K – a Novo that Shoots Uncompressed RAW – at Cine Gear Expo this Weekend

Digital cinema innovator also showcasing original palm-sized Novo action camera, a new iPhone/iPad app, the new Alexa XT, custom rigs and other forward-thinking gear in Booth S309

LOS ANGELES (May 29, 2013) – Radiant Images, a leading L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator, will unveil an updated Novo action camera that shoots uncompressed RAW – called the Novo 2K – in Exhibition Booth S309 at the Cine Gear Expo.

Radiant Images (www.radiantimages.com) also will showcase its original palm-sized Novo action camera and the new ARRI Alexa XT, release a new iPhone and iPad app to search and compare cameras, and share an array of custom 2D and 3D rigs and gear at Cine Gear 2013 at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood. The Radiant Images booth, located in Stage 31, will be staffed from 2-9 p.m. on Fri., May 31 and from 10-5 p.m. on Sat., June 1.

The Cine Gear Expo, an annual four-day conference, is the premier film, video and digital media expo for the entertainment industry, attracting the most dedicated specialists from every major department of the entertainment production and post production world.

Radiant Images is focused on simplicity and ease of use in its digital cinema creations, which are attracting attention from a loyal and growing number of cinematographers, camera operators and producers. Co-founder Michael Mansouri and his team are known to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema with creative, user-friendly solutions – specializing in designing and building custom 2D and 3D rigs as well as modifying cameras and gear.

“We feel like we’re moving in the opposite direction of where everybody else is going with digital cinema,” Mansouri said. “At Radiant Images, we’re lasered in on simplicity in design and operation, ease of use, small form factor, versatility. It’s a new language of cinema and we are helping artists express themselves and achieve their vision with these new, uncomplicated tools.”

The Novo digital cinema camera – the entertainment industry’s newest small form factor action camera – is a prime example.

Co-created by View Factor Studios and Radiant Images, the lens-friendly Novo (www.novocamera.com) is viewed as an ideal solution for professional filmmakers enamored with the capabilities of the GoPro Hero3 but stymied by cinematic limitations.

Key features of the Novo include a C-mount lens system plus a PL mount adapter, back focus adjustment, and exposure control capabilities that open up a wide-range of artistic possibilities for cinematographers and camera operators. The auto exposure function standard with the GoPro can be disabled on the Novo, permitting cinematographers to use the lens to manually adjust the aperture. The Novo achieves this while retaining all the key functionality, versatility and accessories of the GoPro Hero 3.

The tiny Novo, released in February, won a MARIO Award for innovation at NAB 2013. The camera is available for rental only at Radiant Images in the U.S. and new European rental partner P+S Technik.

This weekend at Cine Gear, Radiant Images will unveil an updated version called the Novo 2K. By shooting 2K uncompressed RAW, the Novo 2K enables filmmakers to have full control of latitude, exposure and color renditions, for example, giving them another powerful tool at their disposal.

Radiant Images also is one of the first companies to receive delivery of the new ARRI Alexa XT (Xtended Technology) cameras. Its Alexa XT Plus model will be on display at Cine Gear, giving visitors an up-close look at one of 2013’s most anticipated pieces of equipment, which will eventually replace all Alexa models.

Radiant Images techs will be on hand in Booth S309 (Stage 31) to demonstrate and discuss the Novo and Novo 2K and a wide range of other custom equipment, including the user-friendly CC3D Gen-2 lightweight rig outfitted with twin Sony F65s – used on a Steadicam for the first-time ever on a recent 3D IMAX production in Panama.

Legendary designer Marty Mueller of Converging Concepts worked closely with Radiant Images to create a CC3D Gen-2 rigthat carried two full-sized production cameras, lens, lens control, motors and brackets, yet was light and well-balanced enough to work on a Steadicam – marking a step forward in 3D production.

In addition, visitors to the Radiant Images booth will be able to demo and download a new iOS application created by Radiant Images and compatible with both iPhone and iPad. The free, fully-featured app allows users – including cinematographers, directors, camera assistants and operators, lens techs and producers – to intuitively browse inventory, searching by category, keywords or alpha.

The new app contains non-biased, detailed information about all available production cameras, including a range of camera specs – sensor size, resolution, frame rate, base ISO, latitude, bit rate, recording format, recording time, weight and dimension – plus numerous photos of each product. A 360-degree panorama view is available for select products.

As an organizational tool, the app allows users to set up an infinite number of “projects” (similar to ‘shopping carts’) and switch between them, adding items to whichever project they chose and then submitting for a price quote. The app will be available through the App Store beginning May 31.

“We’re excited about this new app as it fits into our philosophy of simplicity, accessibility and ease of use for our clients,” Mansouri said. “This tool puts tons of information at their fingertips to help them compare cameras and lenses and make informed choices.”

SHARP and Visual Systems introduce Ground-Breaking IGZO™ 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD Display at CineGear Expo 2013

http://www.visusys.com/

Hollywood, CAMay 31. 2013 – This weekend at CineGear Expo 2013 at Paramount Studios, Visual Systems, along with Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America, will present a new 32″ class professional LCD monitor series featuring Sharp’s ground-breaking 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution IGZO™ technology.

”Introducing Sharp’s revolutionary IGZO technology to the Hollywood community will drive innovation in the industry,” said Jim Hackett, president of Visual Systems. “We are very excited to present a fully road-cased Ultra High Definition portable display perfect for on-set critical focus monitoring, playback and production scheduling.  SHARP factory representatives will be in our booth to answer technical questions and provide demos”.

According to industry research, demand for Ultra High-Definition displays, commonly referred to as “4K2K”, is forecast to grow across numerous industries and verticals, including graphics, video editing and production scheduling requiring intensive use of small text and detailed digital drawings. The IGZO professional display series from Sharp delivers ultra-high resolution (3,840 × 2,160 pixels), which is four times the pixel resolution of full 1080p high definition.

Featuring much smaller thin-film transistors (TFTs) as compared to conventional displays, IGZO technology also significantly increases the amount of light transmitted per pixel. As a result, these advanced displays portray vibrant and crisp content with the ability to zoom in to examine the detail of a picture or text, or pan out to view content from a wider angle. This can help boost operational efficiency by sparing users the need to scroll frequently.

Combining Sharp’s IGZO technology with a brilliant white, edge lit LED backlight system, these state-of-the-art monitors measure only 35 millimeters at their thickest point (that’s less than an inch and a half), making them the industry’s thinnest design in their class.

The series consists of two 32” class (31.5” diagonal) displays that are differentiated by touch capability. One of the two models features 10-point multi-touch capability utilizing advanced projected capacitive technology. Its intuitive design is easy to use with either your fingers or the included stylus that enables precision, accuracy and smooth handwriting.

Outfitted with two HDMI® ports and one DisplayPort interface which are both capable of using a single connector cable in order to transmit an ultra-high resolution signal, helping to simplify cable management and reduce desktop clutter. Backed by Sharp’s 3-year limited warranty, both models support landscape and portrait orientation and are designed for 24/7 operation.

Meet the Novo, the New Lens-Friendly Action Camera Made for the Cinema

www.radiantimages.com

The entertainment industry’s newest small form factor digital cinema camera appearing at Cine Gear Expo in Radiant Images Booth S309

LOS ANGELES (April 25, 2013) – The Novo, the new lens-friendly action camera that removes the cinematic limitations of the GoPro Hero3 for professional filmmakers, will be on display in the Radiant Images booth at the upcoming Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood.

Attendees who visit Booth S309 will get an up-close look and hands-on demonstration of the tiny camera that is making a big impression on cinematographers throughout the industry. The palm-sized Novo, winner of a coveted MARIO Award for innovation at NAB in Las Vegas, is viewed as an ideal solution for filmmakers enamored with the capabilities of the GoPro Hero3 but stymied by cinematic limitations.

The Novo features base ISO 640 and 11 stops of dynamic range.

Radiant Images, an L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator, collaborated on the design and function of the Novo with creator View Factor Studios. The Novo (www.novocamera.com) is available for rent only, exclusively at Radiant Images in the U.S. and through its rental partner in Europe, P+S Technik.

“Our goal is to help cinematographers achieve their vision without compromise,” said Michael Mansouri, co-founder of Radiant Images. “The Novo is an important new tool for that purpose.”

The Novo’s lightweight aluminum housing is 20 percent thinner than the GoPro Hero3, fits into the palm of a hand, and includes three bottom and two front 1/4-20 mounting points. Also, four buttons on the front (REC, PWR, WiFi & AUX) are assignable to several functions depending on the application. The Aux button turns the auto exposure on/off, but can also be utilized for other functions, such as digital zoom.

The Novo offers these enhanced cinematic features while also retaining the GoPro Hero3: Black Edition’s key functionality and accessories, such as the LCD touch screen, power backpack and WiFi connectivity for wireless camera control. Like the GoPro, the Novo shoots cinema-quality 2K and 4K resolution.

High speed rotate
We often get asked to go around a subject at high speed. This month we were asked to create a high speed rig for a client wanting to go at over 5m/s (16/sec) around a subject while filming with a high speed Olympus i-Speed camera. Additionally they wanted to be able to go around and around and not have to worry about cables tangling. We created what was needed and the results were pretty jaw-dropping so we thought wed put some of the test footage online.

Standard off-the-shelf rental dolly rail was used and special dolly wheels were used to grip onto to the rail to stop the dolly from flying off due to centrifugal forces. Even so, everything including the rail had to be heavily weighed down to ensure nothing tried to move off during the high speed motion.

Online Motion Control Shop Now OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Some users may have noticed a new addition to our website last month. www.mrmoco.com/shop is our new online shop. Its only a small taster of whats to come, but we thought wed start by putting on some of our popular smaller products online, for users to buy directly from the website. It includes the more standard configurations of our small pan-tilt heads and sliders for motion control and time-lapse, including various controllers. Its only a tiny portion of what we do, and buyers are always welcome to ask about customizations for their specific applications. It also calculates UPS shipping costs although for large orders it is best to get a direct quotation for shipping. More content will be added shortly, but you will find some interesting items on there.

Leicester, UK – 8 January 2013

Cooke Optics will receive an Academy Award® of Merit — an Oscar® statuette — for its continuing innovation in the design, development and manufacture of motion picture camera lenses.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® created the Scientific and Technical Award to honour the men, women and companies whose discoveries and innovations have contributed in significant, outstanding and lasting ways to motion pictures. Each year, the academy honorees are celebrated at a formal dinner held two weeks prior to the Oscar® ceremony. This year’s Scientific and Technical Awards presentation takes place on 9 February 2013 at The Beverly Hills Hotel, LA.

The Academy commented that Cooke receives an Award of Merit because it “helped define the look of motion pictures over the last century.” Cooke lenses are renowned in the industry for the ‘Cooke Look®’, which gives a warm, natural feel to images on the screen. The British company’s innovations over the years have included zoom lenses for movie cameras, the ‘fast’ prime lenses that eliminated the need for bright lights, and more recently its ground-breaking /i Technology protocol, a system adopted by many leading camera and lens manufacturers, that collects crucial lens metadata to provide more accurate information to camera operators and post-production teams.

Les Zellan, Chairman and Owner, Cooke Optics, said, “We are thrilled that the company has been recognised by the Academy after 120 years’ continuous service to the motion picture industry; I’m humbled to accept the award on behalf of all the talented people currently working at Cooke as well as the thousands that have gone before. Cooke has been an innovative force in this industry from the birth of motion pictures to the current digital film revolution. Our commitment has always been to enable customers to realise their vision and help them create the films that capture the imaginations of audiences around the world.”

Each Cooke lens is hand crafted at the factory in Leicester, UK, using a combination of state-of-the-art technology, traditional 100 year old techniques and personal dexterity that come together to create the unique and famed ‘Cooke Look’.

Cooke lenses have recently been used on film projects including A Good Day To Die Hard, After Earth, Hugo, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris and My Week With Marilyn, and on television productions including World Without End, Game Of Thrones, Downton Abbey, True Blood, The Borgias and Chicago Fire.

Pro8mm of Burbank, CA launches a weekly pod cast commencing January 9, 2013 that compliments their new division, Home Movie Legacy, www.homemovielegacy.com

The Home Movie Legacy Project will air live on Wednesdays at 4PM Pacific Time (7EST) with your host, Rhonda Vigeant (author of GET “REEL” ABOUT YOUR HOME MOVIE LEGACY…Before It’s too Late!) If you are the family historian passionate about preserving and sharing family films, a filmmaker wanting to use legacy or found footage in a documentary, a wedding or life-style filmmaker wanting to include super 8 film in your work, a production manager looking to incorporate Super 8 film in a current project, a genealogy buff, memory keeper, or archivist, this show is for you!

http://rockstarradionetwork.com/shows/thehomemovielegacyproject

Rhonda will draw upon her many years of running Pro8mm, a company known worldwide as being the Super 8 experts for production and legacy footage. Pro8mm has developed proprietary technology for the entertainment industry to use Super 8 film in today’s most popular television shows (American Idol, The New Normal, The Neighbors, American Horror Story), theatrical releases (Argo, Super 8, The Fighter) and dozens of music videos and commercials for national brands.  Over 3 decades they have   worked on thousands of super 8 and 16mm projects for the entertainment industry, and have handled millions of feet of film to archive the legacies of the world’s most famous faces. They have digitized historical material for hundreds of documentaries, as well as Presidential Libraries, and Museums.

Some shows will focus on compelling interviews with people who are sharing their personal story using home movies from the past and the present, sharing what was discovered, what was challenged or what was confirmed. Other shows will feature technical content with guest speakers that will teach you how to best move your analog media into your digital life, including how to organize it, repurpose it, share it on social media, or monetize it for a wider audience. A filmmaker forum segment featuring Phil Vigeant, President of Pro8mm, and author of The Power of Super8 Film: Insider Secrets Every Filmmaker Should Know, (Rhonda’s business partner, husband and tech guru) will be routinely included to help you learn what the entertainment industry does with their digital assets, tips on how to become head of your own personal studio, and why filmmakers can and should continue to shoot on film in a ‘digital world.’ Home Movie Legacy isn’t just about grandpa’s old home movies. The term is all-inclusive and casts a wide net on the past, present and future independent filmmaking.

Rhonda is completely passionate about the value of home movies and educating people how to best care for and share them.

“Everyone has a legacy and Home Movies are a living, recorded history of our lives, our family, our community, relationships, celebrations, the way we looked, dressed, and interacted. If a picture is worth a thousand words than a home movie must be worth a million. No where else can we rekindle those moments of times gone by or see ourselves interacting with our loved ones who have passed away. It jolts the memory with such a strong emotion in a way that nothing else can. My life’s work has been dedicated to the belief that not only is it important to see these images, but it is equally as important to preserve them with integrity for future generations so your family legacy on film lives! My show will be a call to action to GET “REEL” ABOUT YOUR HOME MOVIE LEGACY…. BEFORE It’s TOO LATE!”, while enjoying stories about the masses and the moguls who launched their careers by shooting home movies on film and continue to make it a vital part of their professional work today.

SONY EXPANDS LARGE SENSOR CAMERA FAMILY
WITH NEW 4K CAMERA SYSTEMS

visit www.sony.com/35mm

New PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 Models — Plus New PL Lenses, Battery, RAW recorder, Viewfinders,
and Recording Media — Expand Sony’s Line of End-to-End 4K Acquisition Solutions
PARK RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 30, 2012 – Sony Electronics is unveiling two new CineAlta™ 4K cameras,
complemented by a full line of new accessories. The new cameras – models F55 and F5 – have a
modular and compact design for easy configuration, and each features a new type of 4K Super
35mm image sensor with a 4096 x 2160 resolution (11.6M total pixels).
“These two new models join a family of Sony large-sensor cameras that complement each
other and deliver powerful new capabilities to professionals working at every level of production,”
said Rob Willox, director of marketing for large image sensor cameras at Sony Electronics. “They fill
a critical gap in large-sensor acquisition between Sony’s PMW-F3 camcorder and F65 digital
motion picture camera, and give content creators new levels of flexibility and creative options for
acquisition and production in HD, 2K, 4K and beyond. The total line-up, with our new accessories,
further underscores Sony’s commitment to supporting every aspect of the highest-quality
professional workflows.”
New F65 features and future upgrades
The 20-megapixel F65 remains the flagship of Sony’s large sensor acquisition technology.
The 8K sensor-equipped F65 continues to evolve, with new features designed to keep it at the
highest end of professional digital imaging. The most recent feature add-on (Ver2.0) includes a
new high frame rate mode for 8K 16-bit Linear RAW recording at 120P to deliver stunning 4K
images with super smooth slow motion capabilities, as well as the SR codec updated to 12-bit. The
Ver2.0 upgrade was also released for Sony’s SRR4 recorder, as well as the SRPC4 transfer station to
enable 1.5 times faster than real-time transfer speed of 8K 16-bit linear RAW files. Future
upgrades to the F65 will deliver higher than 4K RGB resolution, paint and remote control, and
interfacing with the new OLED viewfinder, among other features strongly desired by the
production community. Click here for more F65 information.
New F55 and F5 Cameras
The new CineAlta 4K cameras deliver unprecedented creative options for HD, 2K QFHD
and 4K production. Both offer multi-codec support: Sony’s new XAVC MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format,
the SR codec (MPEG4 SStP), and the well-established XDCAM 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec. In-camera
recording is to Sony’s new SxS PRO+ memory card media (for the F55, 4K 60p:422 10-bit XAVC and
HD 422 10-bit XAVC High Frame Rate); and for the F5, HD XAVC and HD high frame rate).
PMW-F55 PMW-F5
The F55 can connect to Sony’s new 4K 30-inch LCD monitor, model PVM-X300, using four
3G-SDI interfaces for live monitoring at 4096×2160 up to 60p while recording XAVC 4K and
playback XAVC 4K images. Users can connect directly to Sony’s new 84-inch BRAVIA 4K (3840×2160) LED TV for largescreen
monitoring of the camera’s 4K 60P images (at resized horizontal resolution of 3860 pixels).
Using Sony’s new RAW recorder “AXS-R5,” enhanced high frame rate capabilities allow
shooters to capture super slow-motion imagery in up to 60p 4K RAW on new AXS memory — for
2K RAW, up to 240fps** with the F55; and up to 120 fps**with the F5 — all without crop factor or
loss of angle of view. The F55 adds a global shutter to eliminate rolling shutter skew and flash band, delivering
the same color filter with ultra wide color gamut as the F65 for true color reproduction. The
cameras are further distinguished by wide (14 stops) exposure latitude, high sensitivity, and low
noise. Unique to both the F55 and F5 will be the ability to dual record in a number of different
configurations depending upon codec selection and whether using the optional AXS-R5 RAW
recorder. Combinations will include recording in parallel to a single SxSPro+ card, to both SxS slots
with the same or different codecs, and recording to SxS at the same time as to the AXS-R5 in RAW.
These powerful features enable highly efficient off line, on line workflows and the archiving and
repurposing of the RAW data.
New PL Lens System – The Second Generation
The F55 and F5 cameras continue Sony’s efforts to offer the most flexible lens options. PLmount
prime cine lens technology lets users choose cine optics from Angénieux, Canon, Carl Zeiss,
Cooke, FUJIFILM, Leica, Schneider Optics and others.
New PL-mount prime lenses
Representing Sony’s second generation of cost-effective PL mount prime lenses, each is
certified for 4K capture, and designed to minimize geometric distortion, vignetting and breathing.
A nine-blade iris delivers beautiful bokehs and the focus rings rotate 240 degrees. The new lens
series includes focal lengths of 20, 25, 35, 50, 85 and 135 mm. For easy lens changes, each has the
same T2.0 aperture, the same external diameter, matte box diameter, and gear locations for
follow focus and aperture. All are the same height except for the 135 mm lens.
Shooters can use still lenses by removing the supplied PL-mount adaptor to reveal the
native FZ mount. This makes it easy to accept commercially available adaptors for third-party
lenses, including Canon® EF, Canon FD, Nikon® DX, Nikon G, Leica® M and even 2/3-inch broadcast
B4 lenses. A third option is the use of Sony FZ-Mount lenses with auto focus servo zoom (model
SCL-Z18X140.)
New Digital Viewfinders
Using a new digital interface, F5 and F55 users can take advantage of a new series of highquality
OLED and LCD viewfinders. The DVF-EL100 measures 0.7-inches with 1280 x 720 HD
resolution, superb brightness, contrast and response. DVF-EL100 viewfinder DVF-L700 viewfinder DVF-L350 viewfinder
The DVF-L350 3.5-inch LCD viewfinder offers 10 times the contrast of previous Sony LCD
viewfinders, with a flip-up eyepiece for direct monitoring. A third option is the full HD DVF-L700.
This compact 7-inch LCD viewfinder enables high resolution when shooting in 2K and 4K, with
pixel- to-pixel 1920 x 1080 representation of HD images.
New RAW Recording System
Sony is also unveiling the AXSM™ Access Memory System for 2K*/4K RAW recording,
based on Sony’s unique recording technology. Optimized for this new platform is the AXSM
memory card (512 GB capacity, model AXS-512S24), using the generic file system exFAT which
mounts on PC or Mac systems without requiring a driver. Users can record 4K RAW data up to 60
fps and 2K RAW up to 240 fps**, with a 300MB/s sustained transfer speed. PC-friendly operation is
enabled with the AXS-CR1 card reader, offering a USB 3.0 interface for 2x high speed transfer.
AXSM™ memory card AXS-R5 RAW recorder
Additionally, the new AXS-R5 RAW recorder directly docks onto the F5 and F55, for an
extremely elegant and compact recording solution for 2K** and 4K RAW recording. The AXS-R5
RAW is also the 4K RAW recorder for the NEX-FS700U/UK camcorder via the new interface
adapter HXR-IFR5.
New SxS Recording Media
The cameras support Sony’s new high-speed, enhanced versions of its SxS PRO memory
cards: the SxS PRO+ series (in 128 and 64 GB capacities, models SBP-128B and SBP-64B).
Sony SxS PRO+ memory cards Based on the proven and reliable memory card technology widely used in Sony’s XDCAM
EX camcorders, the new cards support XAVC 4K and XAVC HD high frame rate recording, and can
be directly inserted into the cameras.
New Battery and Charger
The F5 and F55 cameras take advantage of Sony’s new BP-FL75 battery pack, which uses
Olivine—Lithium Iron Phosphate—instead of conventional Lithium Ion cathodes. The result is a
substantial increase in charge-discharge cycles, compared to previous Sony batteries. The Olivine
battery works with Sony’s BC-L90 quick charger. The new battery supports outstanding mobility
for field shooting, enabling two times higher-speed charging than current chargers and a
maximum of 150 minutes consecutive shooting. The F5 and F55 cameras are also compatible with Sony’s BP-GL95A, GL65A, L80S and L60S
batteries, which use the BC-L70 and L160 chargers.
New Shoulder Rig
Delivering advances in ergonomics specifically requested by working cinematographers,
the F5 and F55 cameras feature Sony’s newest shoulder rig for extra stability and comfort in
shoulder-mount applications. The rig is sturdy, lightweight and uses industry-standard rosettes on
both sides for quick and easy attachment of third-party hand grips and other accessories.
Pricing and Availability
The new cameras are planned to be available in February 2013, with suggested list pricing
to be announced. For more information, visit www.sony.com/35mm.

Super 8 Film Summit Gives Hands-on Filmmaking A Shot

www.pro8mm.com

Climb to the Top of Your Super 8 Game! October 19-21, 2012
Pro8mm, of Burbank, CA is announcing their 3rd annual live Super 8 filmmaking weekend workshop! With a fresh new style, Pro8mm is taking you out of the classroom and onto the set. We have evolved our traditional boot camp style workshop into an intimate hands-on learning experience. Give film a shot through hands-on Super 8 shooting with the experts!
Grab your Super 8 movie camera and get ready to watch, learn, and practice your Super 8 filmmaking. With some essential tips, tricks, and guidance from our expert Super 8 filmmakers and trainers, 30 like-minded Super 8 enthusiasts will get the opportunity to spend a weekend learning how to successful successfully shoot Super 8 film in a production-style capacity and incorporate it into a modern day state of the art workflow.
“Essentially, so much has changed over the last few years. In fact, more has changed in filmmaking in the last two years, than the last 10 years. The world of computers, hard drives, data files and encoding is changing so fast. But analog film still has an important place in our HD digital world. There are many myths and facts surrounding the never ending film vs. digital debate. But once you have a grasp on it, you can apply your Super 8 knowledge and shooting skill into that world. My goal for the Super 8 Film Summit is to not only get you up to speed by teaching you the technical information, but the practical knowledge needed to be a great all-around filmmaker and stand out from the competition,” says Phil Vigeant, owner of Pro8mm.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The weekend will kick off with tours of Pro8mm, where the workshop is taking place. You will get to spend some quality time in the processing lab, with the colorists, and the camera techs.
The next two days will be a mix of class-room style sessions, followed by instant field training where you can practice the concepts taught first hand.
“The previous Pro8mm boot camps were great, and so many filmmakers have collaborated and gone on to do amazing things from these events. But there was a need to put the camera into the filmmaker’s hands. We decided that our next workshop should to be hands-on, which is why a state of the art 4-roll Super 8 film package is included with every registration. We’ve also
had to limit it to 30 people, so that the experts can give each filmmaker individual attention based on their experience level. The Summit isn’t just for new Super 8 filmmakers. Anyone looking to brush up on their skills can benefit from it,” says Vigeant. The weekend will end with a screening of some of the film participants shot, so you can see where you excel and where there is room for improvement.
Meet Our Experts!
Throughout the weekend our field experts will take filmmakers around shooting in small groups. They include cinematographer Laura Merians, who has shot Super 8 spots for Whole Foods, and In Style’s Tia & Tamera, among other projects. Daniel Lir and Bayou Bennett, owners of Dolce Films who are award wining filmmakers and screenwriters. They have done some fantastic Super 8 spots for Smashbox Cosmetics. And filmmaker David Dibble, a rising Super 8 star who has done outstanding Super 8 work for The Going Green Film Festival, music videos such as PNKYSWR, and more. While these filmmakers also shoot digital, they have learned that digital can’t replace what film can do. And if you want your movies to look like film, you have to originate on film. They have perfected their craft and are going to teach you the tools that are getting them hired! The entire weekend will be lead by Super 8 expert Phil Vigeant, owner of Pro8mm who has been running a company that services small format film for over 30 years. He is author of the book “The Power of Super 8 Film.” Credited with inventing Max 8 16×9 shooting, and negative Super 8 film, Phil brings his technical expertise on film stocks, processing, and scanning options, which will be covered in detail at the Super 8 Film Summit.
Concepts you will learn and practice: -All basic Super 8 camera features and functions; Lenses — ultra wide, telephoto extenders, C-mount vs. fix-mount; Filters; Focus; Exposure; Transport; Off-speed shooting; Anamorphic; Max 8; Stabilization; eBay pos cameras; Specialty cameras; Back-up; Light meter; Testing before shooting; Sync sound, 18 vs. 24 fps, 85 filter. -Types of Super 8 Film Stock — Fuji vs. Kodak; Color temperature — tungsten vs. daylight; Alternative processing methods — DIY hand processing, Cross processing, Skip bleach, Push/pull; Custom film; Regular 8; 200 foot loads; Double Super 8; Screwing up on purpose — Prep. -Different types of scanners pros and cons of each — Rank Cintel Mark 3 digi 4, Y-front Ursa Diamond, Millennium 2, Spirit, Projected on the wall, Frame by frame; Color Correction — Scene by scene vs. one light; What are the P.E.C.s?; Gamma correction; Digital outputs such as 444.422.Prores, 10-bit un-compressed. 1080i vs. 1080 p workflows. Standard Def vs. High Def scanning.
DAVID DIBBLE
DANIEL & BAYOU
PHIL VIGEANT
LAURA MERIANS

3cP+ Image Control + Gamma Density

www.gammadensity.com

On‐Set/Near‐Set Digital Dailies using Gamma and Density’s 3cP and iPad Previews
3cP “Set + Post” System Combines Mac and iPad to Create, Control and Deliver Digital Dailies
Los Angeles, California – May 24, 2012. Gamma and Density Co. (www.gammadensity.com) will be conducting a Master Class at
CineGear Expo on June 3 , 2012. The class will demonstrate the newest 3cP version supporting the Canon EOS C300, RED Scarlet
and Epic, Tangent Wave control surface and NEW ability to generate native Avid DNxHD MXF files and show how 3cP can enhance
and streamline your on-set, pre-post, and post-production workflow.
These new additions to 3cP—in conjunction with the Gamma and Density’s Image Control Pro and Image Control Lite iPad-based
mobile apps—allow 3cP to be a one-stop method not only for on-the-set use, but also for use during the pre-post and postproduction
phases of a production. Color-corrected dailies created by 3cP Set + Post can be targeted for viewing on many devices—
including the Apple iPad and iPhone—and can be produced in Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD formats.
This technology has allowed Gamma & Density Co. to create an unique workflow, one which is already changing the
cinematographer’s profession. 3cP / Image Control Pro can work as a standalone app by transferring frames directly from your
camera’s SD memory card or via USB using the iPad Camera Connection Kit.
The iPad-based 3cP / Image Control Pro and 3cP / Image Control Lite used in combination with the Mac-based 3cP
“SET+POST” allows users to produce dailies and to work with a variety of new workflows with Arri Alexa, RED, Sony, Canon and
many other cameras, as well as color correct multiple HD-SDI video streams in real time using the Hdlink Pro Box.
The new 3cP Set + Post System Version 5.1 enhancements include:
• Support for Canon EOS C300 import from media, validation, and backup.
• Incorporation of RED SDK 4.3 for Scarlet, REDcolor3, and REDgamma3 support.
• New ability to generate Avid DNxHD MXF files. The Avid DNxHD files generated by 3cP 5.1 are native files, not
QuickTime, consisting of video and audio MXF files, format XML, and AAF file. Files can be directly imported into Avid
systems without rendering. A full selection of DNxHD formats are included for users of 1080i, 1080p, and 720p formats,
including the “x” 10-bit formats. (DNxHD generation is available in 3cP/sf and 3cP/sl versions.)
3cP Version 5.1 also contains previously announced features such as:
• RED Epic support, building on the existing RED One MX support. Support for REDcolor2 and REDgamma2, and new
metadata including camera model, sensor type, camera ID, REDcode setting, whether HDRx or not, and left- or right-eye
indication for stereo footage.
• Tangent Wave control surface support. Just plug in the USB cable and go.
• Real time color correction of up to eight HD-SDI streams with multiple Blackmagic Design HDLinkPro LUT boxes.
• Batch color correction. Apply color correction to multiple clips at one time.
• Automatic generation of multiple LUTs in multiple formats when creating dailies or reports. Great for satisfying all of
post-production’s needs at once.
• LUT export support for the DaVinci / Blackmagic Design Resolve color corrector.
The combination of these enhancements and features make the already popular 3cP the universal tool for DPs/DITs and Post
Production. 3cP has proven itself on over 200 studio films and television shows, and countless independent productions,
commercials, and music videos all over the world. Version 5.1 includes a variety of new and improved tools for working with the
latest cameras. Here is the demo: http://www.gammadensity.com/demo/

THE TIFFEN COMPANY ENGINEERS OPTICAL EXCELLENCE; UNVEILS NEW LINE OF MPTV FILTER PRODUCTS

Filter development leader combines the innovative IRND and Ultra Pol filter technology; Rolls out 1/16 grade models of its popular Tiffen Pro-Mist, Black Pro-Mist and Glimmerglass filters

Hollywood, CA – May 22, 2012 – The Tiffen Company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of award-winning accessories for the still imaging, video, motion picture and broadcast markets, is showcasing the new MPTV line of integrated and enhanced Tiffen® professional photography and motion picture optical filters at Cine Gear Expo Los Angeles 2012 from June 1-3 at booth119. The unprecedented development initiative delivers two distinct filter offerings. The first combines the innovative Tiffen IRND technology with the premium Tiffen Ultra Pol, giving shooters a single-filter solution providing maximum light control and unparalleled IR protection in challenging environments. The second new filter launch features the incredibly popular TIffen Pro-Mist®, Black Pro-Mist®, and Glimmerglass® filters in a 1/16 grade size, expanding the artistic support to 4K camera resolutions.

“Tiffen is known for its outstanding filter design and manufacturing. To maintain this leadership, Tiffen continually invests in research and development,” says Steve Tiffen, President and CEO, The Tiffen Company. “Nearly five years ago Tiffen responded to the demand of IR pollution control filters – and we continue to lead the industry in this technology with innovative releases such as the IRND/Ultra Pol combination. “On the same note, with the advent of 4K digital camera technology, cinematographers and DP’s are looking for creative solutions to work with larger sensors and the hyper-realism resolution associated with these new cameras. We work closely with camera companies and ImageMAKERS like Steven Poster to ensure Tiffen filters such as the Pro-Mist, Black Pro-Mist and Glimmerglass lines are ready to support and enhance the workflows of the next-generation camera technology and visionaries, enabling them to artistically take advantage of the higher-quality image resolution that result from the quantum leaps in technology.”

“With the level of sharpness and information we get with these new cameras and lenses, we are working in hyper-reality. As a DP, the super flatness of the filters we use is very important in relation to both the camera and new production paradigm. The Tiffen process for qualifying and manufacturing flatness is more than sufficient for supporting the new high-end cameras and ground-breaking 4K workflows,” says Steven Poster, Director of Photography and President of the Local 600. “Equally as important is the fact that the new hyper-reality image quality changes our workflow in the sense that we can use Tiffen filters to augment the image as opposed to just diffuse it. The quality and versatility of Tiffen allows us to artistically express the emotion of the production that was never before available. As we move forward with new camera technology, Tiffen filters become more diverse and valuable than ever.”

About the new TIffen MPTV IRND/Ultra Pol Filters
Tiffen has combined its innovative IRND technology with a premium filter – the Tiffen Ultra Pol. Feature highlights of the new combination filter include the following:

•    Essentially three filters in one
•    For digital cameras with CMOS and CCD sensors with heightened response to the Red channel
•    Absorbs pollution of the Far Red (visible) and Near Infrared wavelengths
•    IR absorbing component is proportionate to the ND value
•    No color vignetting on wide angle lenses
•    Available in ND’s up to 1.2, plus the added 2-stop value of the Ultra Pol
•    Extracts the maximum of unwanted glare from the scene
•    Renders white clouds against a dramatically dark blue sky
•    Reflections from water and windows become invisible
•    Ensures richer, truer colors, from glare’s whitewash effects
•    Made from Water white glass

About the new Tiffen Pro-Mist 1/16, Black Pro-Mist 1/16 and Glimmerglass 1/16 Filters
Tiffen has developed a new 1/16 grade level for its highly popular Pro-Mist, Black Pro-Mist and Glimmerglass filters. Feature highlights of the new grade line include:

Pro-Mist
•    Exceptional for creating a mood
•    Excellent for toning down excessive sharpness
•    Reduces contrast by moderately lightening shadow areas without detracting from overall image
•    Yield moderate pearlescent highlight flare that stays close to light source
•    Often used to mute colors and create exquisite pastel tones

Black Pro-Mist
•    Offers all the benefits of the Pro-Mist but in a more subtle form
•    Creates a definely visible, light “pasteling” effect that is delicate with less lightening of the shadows and moderate reduction of contrast

Glimmerglass
•    Softens fine details in a unique manner, while adding mild glow to highlights
•    As the contrast is reduced, the look is one of enhanced beauty
•    Glass has a distinct silver “sparkle”

These new grades are available in popular motion picture sizes. Pricing remains the same as other grades. All Tiffen filters are backed by a ten-year warranty and are proudly made in the USA.

About Tiffen Filters
Tiffen filters are manufactured using the Tiffen award-winning ColorCore™ technology, a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings. This process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of Tiffen filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations.

Pro 8mm

It’s “Showtime” for a Low Budget “Rock-umentry” Made About a High Profile Musician!

www.pro8mm.com

The true spirit of independent filmmaking makes history this week with the premier of “It’s About You” on Showtime! Featuring legendary singer/songwriter John Mellencamp, “It’s About You,” is a 90-minute documentary shot entirely on Super 8 Film by award winning Montana based photographer Kurt Markus and his son Ian. The filmmakers followed Mellencamp for six-weeks in the summer of 2009 where he was performing in small outdoor stadiums across America along with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. During the tour, Mellencamp recorded his new album, “No Better Than This,” which included a session at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis.

With a premier at SXSW (South by South West Film Festival) in Austin in March 2011 (which Mellencamp attended) the film continued to screen at all of John’s live concert’s at venues around the country and in Europe. It brilliantly served as his opening act. This alone makes the film unique in that thousands of Mellencamps’ die-hard fans screened it live prior to its theatrical or television debut. Often minimized as having “low production value” the Super 8 film stocks held up amazingly well being digitally projected on the big screens in the concert venues, and added to the nostalgic culture of seeing Mellencamp on the screen performing old and new favorites prior to his taking the stage.

The world premier theatrical release was in January of this year in New York and Los Angeles. But the real story here is that the film was not made by armies of people. It was made by a father and son with a creative vision to go solo. They filled their dream to go it alone.  While the films reviews were mixed, the technical merits and accomplishments of what this film says about independent filmmaking are cinematic feats. To make an Indy documentary worthy of a coveted spot of Showtime is reason alone to applaud Kurt and Ian Markus.

The filmmakers interfaced with one particular man at one particular company for their entire workflow. Philip Vigeant, owner of Pro8mm in Burbank, California has been pushing the Super 8 film format to it’s maximum potential for over 30 years. In preproduction meetings with Kurt Markus, they discussed what challenges would most likely arise and how they could be overcome. Kurt would often say, “we’re attached at the hip”, noting that the film could not have been made without the coaching and masterminding with Vigeant.

The film was shot entirely on 450 rolls of Pro8mm color negative (Kodak Vision 3 stocks) They had two Beaulieu 6008 Super 8 cameras that were modified for MAX 8 (a 16 x 9 widescreen aspect ratio) and Crystal Sync. The film was shot with just one camera at a time, with a second on hand for back up.  Pro8mm processed all the film in house at our Burbank lab, and scanned it in native 1080 HD to Pro Res 422 on a Millennium II HD state of the art scanner with full scene-to-scene color correction.  Vigeant, who was also the colorist on the project worked closely with Kurt Markus to overcome some the technical challenges faced on doing a project of this nature – shooting on the road over a 6 week period with no crew.

.In the scanning suite colorist Phil Vigeant performed a number of creative special effects. These included scanning photos that Kurt Markus shot of Mellencamp that were re-photographed on Super 8 film. This allowed the ability to add movement and interest. This technique permitted the film to stay true to the “shot entirely on Super 8” mantra. Some of the digital film back up shot by Ian Markus in the recording studio was also re-photographed on Super 8 film, which punctuated cinematic interest.

The choice of modern Super 8 film was perfect to achieve the “vintage look” that the filmmaker was going for, but with all the latitude that Kodak Vision 3 stocks offer. The grain structure held up amazingly well on the big screen, and the filmmakers were able to achieve their creative vision.

It’s About You is scheduled to play on SHOWTIME at these times, and “On Demand” It will also be available on DVD through Amazon.

The dialogue is structured so that questions from the audience drive the conversations, and will be moderated by Dibie, chairman of the ASC Education and Public Outreach Committee for the organization.

“As production and post-production become more intertwined in today’s filmmaking environments, the role of the cinematographer as artist of the images is more important than ever,” says Dibie. “The ASC is dedicated to supporting emerging filmmakers, sharing our knowledge, and collaborating with all departments in the creation of moving images.”

Dibie notes that ASC members frequently speak at colleges and universities around the world, as well as at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood, where many film school students join members for intimate dialogues regarding movie-making.

“We open our doors to anyone studying screenwriting, directing, producing, design, acting, etc. because it takes a collective effort to succeed in the process of telling a story for the screen with compelling visuals,” adds Dibie.

STEADICAM TAKES A QUANTUM LEAP FORWARD IN ANATOMY GEAR WITH NEW FAWCETT EXOVEST — ON DISPLAY AT CINE GEAR 2012 AT THE TIFFEN BOOTH 119

Hollywood, CA — May 17, 2012 — The Tiffen Company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of award-winning accessories for the still imaging, motion picture and broadcast markets, is pleased to introduce the new Steadicam® Fawcett Exovest™, which will be on display at Cine Gear Expo Los Angeles 2012 at booth 119. The Fawcett Exovest is an ultra-light exoskeletal Steadicam vest that transfers weight into anatomically appropriate areas and bridges areas that should not be loaded. “The exceptional new Steadicam vest design was developed by Chris Fawcett, an expert on physiology of human weight-bearing appliances. Chris is also the author of Steadicam Posture,” says Steve Tiffen, President and CEO, The Tiffen Company. “With his credentials behind the ergonomic Exovest design, the bar for comfort and performance has been raised to an all-time high.”

Compared to conventional vests, the Fawcett Exovest is lighter and less constrictive, allowing for better respiration, circulation, transpiration and movement, and is especially comfortable for female operators.

The resultant feel is of increased lightness and control. After docking, the entire vest may be relaxed by means of one over-center lever, as the upper pad system bed is only under load; and in case of emergency, the vest and rig may be jettisoned by a rapid safety-release.

Attendees at Cine Gear 2012 can get a hands-on look at the brand new Steadicam Fawcett Exovest at the Tiffen booth, 119.

STEADICAM UNVEILS THE XTRAORDINARY NEW X-SERIES CAMERA STABILIZER SUPPORT ARMS

The world leader in camera-stabilizing systems rolls out new X-Series product line and showcases two high-performance camera-lifting arm solutions: the Steadicam G-50x and G-70x

Hollywood, CA – May 17, 2012 – The Tiffen Company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of award-winning accessories for the still imaging, video, motion picture and broadcast markets, is showcasing at Cine Gear Expo Los Angeles 2012 (booth 119) the brand-new Steadicam® X-Series, a new high-performance camera stabilizer support arm system. Designed for professional video and film production, the new Steadicam X-Series line includes the G-50x and G-70x models, offering a 29-inch (73 cm) boom range with outstanding camera-lifting capacities of up to 50 and 70 pounds (23 and 32 kg), respectively. “Steadicam continues to perfect the art of storytelling by introducing solutions such as the X-Series camera stabilizer support arms that incorporate outstanding ergonomic and engineering design,” says Steve Tiffen, President and CEO, the Tiffen Company. “They continue to outpace the competition and remain true to the Steadicam tradition of delivering best-in-class solutions that set the industry standard for expected quality and performance. This is why there is only one authentic Steadicam.”

Steadicam X-Series – High-Performance Camera Stabilizer Support Arms
The next-generation Steadicam arm technology – the X-Series – features the G-50x and G-70x models. The revolutionary, patented Geo spring geometry optimizes production performance and elegance throughout its lifting range. The X-Series tames high/low arm travel with adjustable-length positioning that dynamically rocks the spring termination as the arm is boomed up or down. Powered by titanium springs, the G-50x arm smoothly carries any load from 12 to 50 pounds (5.4 to 23 kg) while the G-70x supports loads from 13 to 70 pounds (5.8 to 32 kg). The all-new bearing performance and geometry enhancements on the G-50x and G-70x arms make even the slowest cameras move ultra smooth.

The G-50x and G-70x Arm Specifications and Benefits
•    The new G-50x and G-70x arm systems are lightweight at 8.6 lbs/3.9 kg and 10.8 lbs/4.9 kg, respectively, and user-maintainable, and have a 29-inch (73 cm) boom range. Both have soft bumpers at each end of travel so the arm can be boomed right to its limits without shot-disturbing clunks. Each also has Ride control that adjusts the iso-elastic™ response of the arm.
•    Arm posts are locked in place by a single button or lever, so switching arm posts is quick and easy. This quick-change mechanism also has an adjustable drag for the post’s rotation, from completely free to totally locked.
•    At the socket block end of the G-70x arm is a new, “kick back” link, which gets the arm further out of the way as the sled crosses the operator’s body, and keeps the arm from banging against the stops in normal operation.

Steadicam Unparalleled Design Backed by World-Class Support
Steadicam designed the new X-Series camera-lifting arm units with increased structural strength, improved geometry, and tough type III hard anodize on the main arm components, ensuring years of lasting durability.

The G-70x and G-50x arms come with an industry-surpassing standard three-year full parts and labor warranty that includes all components, including springs and socket blocks. The transferrable standard warranty also includes one complementary factory tune-up to ensure the arm is performing at its best.

Cine Gear 2012 attendees can see the new Steadicam X-Series camera stabilizer support arms along with other popular Steadicam products at the Tiffen booth, 119.

Pricing and Availability
The new Steadicam X-Series G-50x and G-70x models are available today through the Tiffen worldwide reseller network for a list price of USD 11,4000.00 and USD 18,800.00 respectively. Visit www.tiffen.com for more information.

Glidecam Industries, Inc.,  Kingston, MA

www.glidecam.com

The GLIDECAM XR-SERIES
XR-1000, XR-2000 and XR-4000.

Glidecam Industries, Inc. introduces The GLIDECAM XD-Series of camera stabilizers

The amazingly advanced and re-designed Glidecam XR-Series™ from Glidecam Industries brings versatility and affordability to the world of Hand-Held Camera Stabilization.

The lightweight and state-of-the-art Glidecam XR-1000, XR-2000 and XR-4000 hand-held Camera Stabilizers will transform your hard to watch, shaky camera footage into hypnotically smooth, professional footage.

With the Glidecam XR-Series hand-held Stabilizers your camcorder seems to float, always balanced, isolated from your hands undesirable motions. Now you are free to move with your camera – panning, tilting, booming or running without any camera instability or shake.

The Glidecam XR-Series works so well that it allows you to shoot incredibly smooth and graceful shots even while going to extremes like running up and down stairs or traveling over rugged terrain. And when it comes to normal shooting, like walking or moving the camera slowly around someone, the results are equally magical.

Each XR-Series Stabilizer’s offset, foam cushioned, Handle Grip is attached to a free floating, three axis Gimbal. This allows your hand to move up and down, and side-to-side, thereby isolating your hand’s unwanted motions from the camera. This up and down movement alleviates the bouncing, pogo-type action often associated with our competitor’s system because their handle cannot move up and down. This design feature, coupled with the overall higher inertia of the XR-Series systems, produces superior stabilization when compared with our competition.

A unique and proprietary, precision, three-axis Gimbal incorporates several adjustable, axis convergence controls. This allows all three axes to intersect for proper operational alignment.

The Camera Mounting Platform can be adjusted to move back and forth, and side to side, to quickly allow you to adjust the camera’s horizontal balance.

By varying the amount of Counter Weight Disks on the Base Platform, or by changing the length of the no-tools telescoping Central Post, you adjust the camera’s vertical balance. When balanced properly the camera floats, ready for you to move into action.

Shot after shot, move after move, the Glidecam XR-Series Stabilizers deliver beautifully smooth and professional results. With the Glidecam XR-Series you no longer need a tripod or a dolly. All you need is your Imagination!

Glidecam Industries, now becoming the choice of a generation. Glidecam makes your decisions concerning camera stability and movement, simple and easy. When you wish for your camera to glide smoothly along your chosen path, simply rely, as so many have and still do, on using a Glidecam Camera Stabilizer. Glidecam Industries, Inc., now in its nineteenth year, offers a wide range of camera stabilizers each optimized for various camera weights and shooting conditions.

Pro8mm, the company formerly known as Super8Sound™ takes their 40-year legacy as inventors of sync sound for Super 8 by launching an audio encoding system specifically for Small Format Film. While we have offered sync sound masters for Super 8 and 16mm from  fullcoat for many years, our new system is designed specifically for single system film with audio stripe.

This upgrade of our audio system allows us to scan directly to our state-of-the art Millennium II 2K Scanner with audio and picture in sync. The system can handle all types of sound tracks used in small format film, including Super 8 main magnetic track, Super 8 stereo main and balance track, Regular 8 main track, 16mm with magnetic track, and 16mm with optical audio track.Of special interest is our capability to handle audio for regular 8, a specialty that is both unique and rare. Millions of feet of audio stripe are eliminated from archives and private home movie collections because most facilities do not have the capacity to transfer it, and in many cases,  can’t recognize that the sound stripe on the film exists. Our experienced team members are trained to  be able to quickly identify if there is sound on your film and what type it is.Throughout the history of filmmaking, sound in many forms has been used in conjunction with small gauge film. Sound has been recorded on film either using magnetic or optical systems, and has had many challenges from fidelity
issues to holding sync with picture. Part of the Super8 Sound™ legacy is having been the company to invent a fullcoat recorder and double system filmmaking
so that audio for super 8 film could be done the same way it was done in larger formats.  We continue this legacy today by giving you the opportunity to create a magnificent new digital master of your film and sound in perfect sync with high quality audio.Pro8mm will have a base set-up charge for the new system of scanning film with audio.Super 8 Main Track, 16mm Optical, 16mm Magnetic

Introducing The “Rhonda Cam”

A Small, Trendy, Affordable Workhorse of a Super 8 Camera

www.pro8mm.com

PROTOTYPE TO BE BETA TESTED AT CINE GEAR EXPO BY ATTENDEES

Pro8mm films it forward again with the introduction of the trendy new Rhonda Cam.  Named for company co-owner, The Rhonda Cam commemorates her 30th anniversary with the company.  Evolved from a Canon 310 XL, this super 8 camera was originally produced from 1975-1983. It was adorned as being the world’s fastest lens speed of f/1.0, and a 3x zoom and macro shooting as close as 215 mm from the film plane mark if the zooming lever was set at “Macro.”

More than a retro throw back with a modern look; we are bringing it back because even today, it can do something no other camera can do.  It has the professional application as being the lowest light film camera on the market!  The f/1.0, coupled with modern film stocks such as a 500 ASA is something filmmakers need in low light situations, such as indoor weddings or studio shots.

Part of The Rhonda Cam’s appeal is it’s “toy like” appearance” in spite of the amazing pictures it can film.  It measures just 7” x 4 ½ ” x 1 ¾ ”!

The camera is available with a variety of skins including animal print and camouflage. Eventually it is likely that custom skins will be available.

Rhonda states, “I wanted to design something young and fun that would appeal to a new generation of filmmakers that looked cool and was simple enough to use; a camera that they would be inclined to just pick up and shoot.” I also have heard from many of our regular clients that they have wanted a really small point and shoot super 8 camera that can be thrown into their handbag or backpack.  We thought that we would be bold and come up with something really stylish that would appeal to the wedding filmmakers, and all the genres of super 8 lifestyle filmmakers we work with.  I can’t wait to see it “on set” in the fashion industry, music videos, skating and boarding.  I can just picture a camera on every table at a wedding, matching the décor of the event.

Pro8mm has not modified the original specs of the camera.  Our team of expert camera techs have gone through and tested each camera to bring it back to factory standards, including the focus, take up and exposure The Rhonda Cam runs on two AA batteries.  As a simple point and shoot super 8 camera, we anticipate that it will not be able to perform to the same extent as other cameras in our line, while being the perfect choice for certain filming situations.  The Rhonda Cam has a limited range of exposure (40 and 160) During this “Beta Test” period, we will be able to determine which film stocks run best.  We know from experience that certain cameras prefer certain stocks.  Since we will not be increasing the pick up torques or exposure settings we will make available recommendations moving forward.

Fujifilm to receive the Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science

http://www.fujifilm.com/products/motion_picture/

Award given for the development of the black and white recording film ETERNA-RDS for digital separation of motion picture films

FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO: Shigetaka Komori) has announced that Fujifilm has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science to receive the 2011 Scientific and Engineering Award for the development of the black and white recording film ETERNA-RDS, digital separation of motion picture films. The ceremony is to take place on February 11, local time, in Los Angeles, USA.

ETERNA-RDS is a film designed specifically for archival preservation that conducts 3-color separation of color images and stores them as stable black and white images (silver images), with the purpose of preserving motion picture information for a long term and passing on motion picture contents as cultural heritage to generations to come. This film was added to Fujifilm’s lineup in April 2010.
ETERNA-RDS is designed for laser film recording and realizes superior photographic performance (sharpness / graininess). It also offers exquisite processing stability for both black and white negative and positive development.

In recent years, digital filming in motion picture production have become more common, resulting in the rapid increase of digital preservation of film information. However, it is still not versatile as there are risks of being unable to reproduce the preserved image information due to the degradation of media where the data was saved or the rapid model change of hard disks where it was to be played on.

Fujifilm was highly commended for the significant step it made in protecting the heritage of the motion picture industry, with the development of ETERNA-RDS, which led to this award. The film is already being used for the archival preservation of many Hollywood films.
This Award is given in the name of FUJIFILM Corporation as well as in the names of Katsuhisa Ozeki, Hiroshi Hirano and Hideyuki Shirai, the 3 engineers who designed and developed ETERNA-RDS.

This Award has encouraged Fujifilm even more to make further contributions in the archival motion picture film field.

A Gaffer’s Essential

www.toughgaff.com

How it all began? ToughGaff’s Inventor is Speaking:

During my film studying, I’ve built my very own Steadicam, knowing that this is what I want to do. I want to be a Steadicam operator, and work on sets. So I started working on production sets, gripping, gaffering, loading, lighting etc.

I can clearly remember the day and the production I was at, when it hit me. Wasting too much time and effort seeking for my gaffer tape, or taking like forever to untie it from its clumsy rope, or standing on a ladder, needing to secure myself with one hand, having only one other left (that’s all I have…) to get the gaffer out. I can go on and on, but it was clear to me. Something has to be done.

And here we are, 4 years later, thousands of sketches were drawn, hundreds of materials were tested, many different shapes were suggested and tried, until I came to the right prototype that became the right ToughGaff, which I’m very proud of.

Today I’m a Steadicam operator. I don’t do lighting or grip anymore, but I’m so very happy to see the crew on sets working with the ToughGaff, so efficient and easy, that they can not understand how they have worked without it so far.

I love my work, and love to see any work getting done properly, focusing on what’s really important, having our tools work for us, and not the other way around.

With love,

Nir Bar.

ToughGaff’s inventor & CEO, Steadicam operator.
