ARRI honored by Cine Gear Expo

The Cine Gear Expo 2015 Lifetime Technical Achievement Award was bestowed to ARRI on June 5 in a ceremony at Paramount Studios Hollywood. The distinction recognizes ARRI’s dedication to advancing motion picture technology along with the art and craft of filmmaking over its 98-year history. Former American Society of Cinematographers president Daryn Okada presented the award to ARRI Inc. President and CEO Glenn Kennel. “It is pretty undeniable what their impact will be in the future. They keep innovating,” said the DP whose credits include CASTLE and LET’S BE COPS.

Kennel accepted the honor, saying: “Thank you to Cine Gear for this recognition. But most importantly, thank you to our customers who have supported us for 100 years. And thank you for always pushing us to raise the bar, to make the very best tools…We pledge to continue the tradition.” He then welcomed his predecessor Volker Bahnemann and Walter Trauninger, Managing Director of Business Unit Camera to join him on stage. They each thanked the organizers for recognizing ARRI’s legacy and noted the exciting future ahead.

Says Karl Kresser, President of Cine Gear Expo: “ARRI has been and continues to be a technological leader from the first 16mm and 35mm film cameras to today’s latest digital offerings to lighting equipment and on to post production. The products have been successfully introduced and accepted in virtually every market around the globe. ARRI continues to invest and search for new trends and attract talented team members to stay in the forefront of this industry. We decided to honor this fantastic achievement.”

Ianiro presents the new Mintaka LED light

At Cinegear Los Angeles, Paramount Studios, from June 5  to 7, booth S219, Ianiro will present our new range of multi-use Mintaka LED lamps. Mintaka is the name of one of the three stars making up the Constellation of Orion, called “The String of Pearls” for its brightness. This is how we recall the tradition of Ianiro’s “sidereal” series dating back to the ’50s and ’60s, which named the projectors after stars (Ariel, Mizar, Polaris, Orion etc.).

The unique characteristic of this series is efficiency – for its high illuminance and low power consumption – and its multi-functionality.

Mintaka can be used as both an Open Face and as a variable-focus Spot Fresnel – all wrapped up in just one lamp.

Highly Accurate
Highly accurate display agnostic measurement of all current and emerging display technologies.
Spectroradiometer Measurement Accuracy at Colorimeter Pricing

Why buy a $7,000 colorimeter that still needs display specific calibration matrices programmed when you can get a true spectroradiometer for the same price?5nm Spectral Bandwidth Standard

The 8nm and 10nm spectral bandwidth spectroradiometers on the market just aren’t adequate for dealing with today’s wide-gamut, spiky spectral distribution displays.
Performance on par with $25,000+ Spectroradiometers
We’ve done extensive comparative testing and have been impressed with how well the CR-250 holds up against significantly more expensive spectroradiometers.Convenient, Compact, Lightweight
Large measurement spot size and a rubber hood mean you have the option to place the CR-250-RH directly against the screen, which is simply not possible with many other high-end spectroradiometers on the market. The CR-250 is also very lightweight (1 lb / 0.45 kg) and extremely compact: a spectroradiometer you can easily transport.

The CR-250-RH is available at www.ShopFSI.com for just $6,990.

Want the speed and exceptional lowlight capabilities of a top tier colorimeter combined with the accuracy of the CR-250 spectroradiometer? Get the specially priced CR250 Spectroradiometer & CR-100 Colorimeter bundle at www.ShopFSI.com for a $685 discount!

Industry Staple Now Nearly Eliminates Ultraviolet Radiation

Hollywood and Danvers, Mass. (June 4, 2014) – At Cine Gear Expo 2014, OSRAM SYLVANIA is introducing a new group of single end HMI® metal halide lamps that incorporate a  doped UV-Stop (UVS) quartz outer jacket which reduces UVB and UVC emissions up to 99.9%.   UVS not only extends the life of fixture components, it also reduces UV emissions from the back of fixtures.  Most importantly, HMI lamps equipped with UVS achieve these benefits without compromising performance.  New single end OSRAM HMI UVS lamps will come with an orange base and are available in 200W, 400W, 575W, 800W, 1200W, 1600W and 1800W versions, delivering 16,000 to 165,000 lumens with an average rated life up to 1000 hours.

“For over 40 years, OSRAM HMI lamps continue to provide the film and event industries with high intensity light that closely simulates natural sunlight,” said Stephen Robertson, product marketing manager, OSRAM SYLVANIA.  “Now, we are offering the same high performance lamps with a new safety feature that greatly reduces the risk of exposure to ultraviolet radiation.”

Invented by OSRAM in 1967, HMI lamps remain the standard light source for the film and television industry because they simulate daylight color temperature conditions of 6000K and have excellent color rendering (90+) with photometric integrity throughout their life.  In fact, OSRAM received an OSCAR® in 1987 and a PRIMETIME EMMY® Engineering award in 2007 for the invention and continuous improvement of HMI lamp technology.

Highly efficient HMI lamps have a high luminous efficacy of nearly 100 lumens per watt (LPW) and are available in single or double end with wattages ranging from 200 to 24,000.  Dimmable, with a hot restart capacity, OSRAM HMI lamps are over five times more efficient than incandescent light.  Applications include exhibition lighting; film, TV and video productions; industrial solar simulation; lighting for major events; professional photography; and stage lighting such as theatre and opera.

Radiant Images to Showcase Custom-Built Gear and Solution-Based Approach at Cine Gear Expo June 6-7

Radiant’s Booth S216 will overflow with forward-thinking camera stabilizers, specialty lenses, workflow solutions, drones, underwater housings and other custom accessories

LOS ANGELES (June 3, 2014) – Visitors to the Radiant Images Booth S216 at Cine Gear 2014 will be treated to the digital cinema innovators’ latest breakthroughs and solutions, including Novo action camera accessories and a wide selection of custom camera stabilizers that are revolutionizing filmmaking.

Radiant Images, a solution-oriented rental house singularly focused on advancing cinematography, will showcase the hottest gear, such as the revolutionary Phantom Flex 4K, lightweight RED Carbon Dragon and compact ARRI Master Anamorphics, as well as its latest creations. Custom DIT stations will be on display, featuring the Codex Vault 2, Codex View and Ovide Smart Assist. Other innovative products will include new Microview lenses, Steadicar, cinema drones and underwater housings.

Radiant’s Exhibition Booth S216, located in Stage 31, is expected to again be among the liveliest and most comprehensive at the Cine Gear Expo on June 6-7 at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood. The booth will be staffed from 2-9 p.m. on Fri., June 6 and from 10-5 p.m. on Sat., June 7.

“We’re excited about Cine Gear because it gives us an opportunity to share our latest creations and discuss our approach with filmmakers and technicians who stop by our booth,” said Michael Mansouri, VP at Radiant Images. “Our focus is simplicity in design and operation, ease of use, small form factor, versatility. It’s a new language of cinema and we are helping artists express themselves with these new, uncomplicated tools.”

The Cine Gear Expo, an annual four-day conference, is the premier film, video and digital media expo for the entertainment industry, attracting the most dedicated specialists from every major department of the entertainment production and post production world.

Rather than taking a standard rental house approach, Radiant Images (www.radiantimages.com) is focused on finding ways to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema, specializing in designing and building custom 2D and 3D solutions that enable cinematographers to achieve their vision without compromise.

Mansouri and his team of experienced technicians, including Sinclair Fleming, Radiant’s in-house engineer, and the firm’s rental agents will be on hand at Cine Gear to demonstrate and discuss Radiant’s offerings.

The various handheld, aerial and motorized camera gimbals, including the just-released DJI Ronin handheld system, are expected to take center stage in the Radiant Images booth.

Two of Radiant’s gyro stabilized camera gimbals – the FreeFly MōVI M10 and Novo Stabilized – are redefining the possibilities for camera movement in cinema. Both handheld devices incorporate breakthrough camera stabilization technology to quickly solve one of the biggest challenges faced by filmmakers – moving a camera in a steady path.

The MōVI M10 is praised for its ability to smoothly pan, tilt or roll remotely to create camera moves that are unlike anything ever seen before – yet are amazingly easy to execute.

Radiant Images has made further modifications, such as shaving off weight with lighter cables, and integrating wireless HD video and wireless focus control, to enable the MōVI to handle a wide range of lenses with ease on larger digital cinema cameras, including the RED Epic, Alexa M and Canon’s EOS 1DC, 5D Mark III, C300 and C500 – even the Sony F55.

Radiant also created a new wireless Geared MōVI accessory to enable ultra smooth and more precise pans, tilts and rolls unachievable from the standard remote control joystick.

The easy-to-use, lightweight Novo Stabilized is designed specifically for Radiant’s award-winning 3.2-ounce Novo digital cinema camera, giving professional filmmakers a powerful new tool with the tiny action camera. A fully outfitted Novo Stabilized weighs in at a mere four pounds.

Fleming, Radiant’s director of engineering, created the high-performance, 3 axis stabilizer that offers 360 degrees of continuous rotation using magnetic fields and no mechanical parts. The high-torque servo drive, designed with reduction of vibration in mind, is capable of the highest precision possible.

Radiant Images also will display its Novo Copter Cinema System, considered the world’s most versatile cinema drone. The ultra-compact quadcopter from the Drone Dudes features more professional cinematic qualities than any other aircraft in its class.

The versatile and unique Novo camera (www.novocamera.com), developed by Radiant Images and View Factor Studios and released in 2013, its sister Novo 2K and the SI-2K Nano are continuing to captivate filmmakers.

The Novo offers key cinematic features missing from other action cameras in its class, including interchangeable lens, back focus adjustment and exposure control capabilities. The camera won a MARIO Award for innovation at NAB 2013. The Novo 2K shoots 2K uncompressed RAW, enabling filmmakers to have full control of latitude, exposure and color renditions.

The Novo has been used in a number of feature films, including Transformers 4, Ten, Fast & Furious 7 and In the Heart of the Sea as well as NBC’s Revolution. It was on the set for the Oscar winner Danny Boyle-produced TV drama Babylon, which was just picked up by Sundance TV for airing in 2015. The cameras also played a key role in the success of the award-winning short Random Stop and were used in the latest Toyota campaign now airing that features the Muppets en route to the premiere of Muppets Most Wanted.

Other gear and accessories that will be on display in the Radiant Images booth at Cine Gear includes:

  • The new Optitek Epic EF Mount allows users to wirelessly control the iris and focus of Canon EF lenses without having to attach a motor lens control system to the camera.
  • A pair of fully-submersible underwater housings for the Novo, including a slick new handheld housing featuring wireless HD video, HD surface monitoring, internal power, external power, external remote start/ stop and a rear viewing window.
  • Microview Lenses that offer magnification up to 16x and can focus from infinity down to 18mm.
  • The powerful new Phantom Flex4K high-speed cinema camera, capable of shooting 1000 fps at full 4K resolution and offering spectacular high-definition image quality through a wide range of frame rates.
  • RED’s groundbreaking new 6K Epic Dragon and lightweight Dragon Carbon Fiber, which offer filmmakers dynamic range once thought impossible for a digital sensor.
  • ARRI Master Anamorphic lenses that offer a smooth, cinematic look, achieved with a  perfect combination of compact size, minimal weight, high speed and exceptional optical design. They represent a significant step forward in the technology and practicality of anamorphic cinematography.
  • The revolutionary Codex Vault and Codex Vault 2 on-set or near-set media management systems provide a simple, easy-to-use workflow solution.
  • The all-in-one Ovide Smart Assist, the most advanced video-assist system in the world, designed with mobility and simplicity in mind.

New at MAC WORLD, 2014

iPro Lens System Now for iPhone 5, 5S, 4/4S, Galaxy S4, & iPads

Schneider Optics, Van Nuys, California: The iPro Lens System of versatile interchangeable lenses has been expanded so it is now compatible with even more devices including iPhone 5, 5S, and 4/4S, as well as Samsung Galaxy S4, and current iPads.

Designed by professional lens and filter maker, Schneider Optics, the iPro Lens System is purpose-built to enable professional quality photographic and video imagery with smartphones and iPads by adding the benefits of interchangeable Macro, Wide Angle, Super Wide, Fisheye, and Telephoto lenses to capture more in every shot.

These five interchangeable lenses optically capture the image without sacrificing valuable pixels. For a wider field of view, the space expanding Wide Angle adds 35% and the Super Wide adds 50% more coverage so there’s no more backing up against the wall to get a large group or object in a confined space. For wide action or scenic shots there’s nothing like the Fisheye’s 165-degrees for extraordinary angles. The 2X Tele compresses space getting close-up to the action so shots from the audience of sporting events or the school play let you zero in on the subject. The Macro lens has 2.5X magnification and provides razor-sharp details giving small subjects or objects a big presence. The iPro Lens System’s professional optics are simple to use, easy to handle, and smartly self-storing in an integral black case that doubles as a handle.

Now there are purpose-built cases for the Galaxy S4 as with the iPhone 5, 5S, and 4/4S, so the lenses simply thread on and are ready to shoot. With a slide-on design, the rugged 2-piece cases offer fast installation and removal and an easy-to-handle soft touch feel. A quick bayonet mount securely fastens the lenses to the custom iPro cases.

The new iPro Lens Clip is designed to securely fit the latest models of iPad Mini, iPad Mini with retina display, iPad Air and iPad 2. Owners have the versatility to use the same iPro lenses on either the smart device’s built-in iSight camera or Facetime camera. The Clip is quick and easy to install without altering the iPad in any way, so interchanging iPro lenses from device to device is a breeze.

The iPro System is available in kits or by individual lenses or components, so the user can customize a system to suit their needs. To order, or for more information, visit www.iprolens.com.

Shot over five years in 25 countries around the world (and expanding on the themes they developed in Baraka) Samsara explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of humanity’s spirituality and the human experience. Neither a traditional documentary nor a travelogue, Samsara takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation.

Band Pro’s founder, Amnon Band noted: “For our 30th anniversary, we wanted to do something really special to thank everyone for their support.  Samsara was shot on IMAX film and cut digitally for 4K projection.  It’s a great way to celebrate Band Pro Film & Digital with our friends in the industry.

PAG Launches Linking Gold Mount Battery at NAB

LONDON—11 March 2014—At NAB 2014, PAG, one of the broadcast industry’s longest established global providers of innovative portable power solutions, will launch its new Gold Mount® (3-Stud Snap-On®) compatible, high-current, PAGlink battery, a replacement for all Anton/Bauer® Li-Ion batteries. The new battery will be showcased by Manios Digital & Film, Stand C9539.

“PAGlink is the first truly digital linking battery system,” says PAG Sales Director Nigel Gardiner. “It offers more power, more functional benefits and more technological advances than any other system.”

The smaller and lighter PAGlink HC-PL94T Li-Ion battery is compatible with Gold Mount camera plates and Anton/Bauer Li-Ion chargers; there is no need to change either in order to benefit from the many advantages of these new, revolutionary intelligent-linking batteries.

PAGBatTwo or more PAGlink batteries, in any state of charge, can be linked, combining their capacities and enabling a higher current to be drawn. Up to 12A can be supplied for power hungry camera set-ups with multiple accessories. Individual high-current PAGlink packs are capable of 10A alone. Two linked packs provide longer run-time than two single packs used consecutively. PAGlink also allows batteries to be hot-swapped for continuous power. (International patents have been applied for PAGlink.)

PAGlink was designed so that flight-friendly 94 watt-hour battery units can be linked to create a high-capacity Li-Ion power source on location. Linking two HC-PL94T packs creates an 188Wh battery. Although Li-Ion batteries with capacities greater than 160 watt-hours are banned from passenger flights, 94Wh PAGlink batteries—which are UN certified and embody unsurpassed safety features—are allowed in unlimited quantity.
Uniquely, up to four PAGlink batteries can be linked for charging on AB Li-Ion chargers, effectively resulting in a 16-channel unit. That results in less battery swapping and a need for fewer chargers. PAGlink batteries display their individual status during charging. PAGlink allows up to eight batteries to be linked in total for charge or discharge.

“Intelligent PAGlink batteries form a network when linked, allowing them to communicate with each other and manage output safely and efficiently,” notes Gardiner. “It also enables them to communicate automatically with the camera data system that allows Anton/Bauer batteries to display their remaining capacity in the camera viewfinder/LCD. PAGlink is the right battery for today’s increasingly computerized cameras. It makes other battery systems seem crude by comparison.”

PAGChgThe PAGlink HC-PL94T battery incorporates a convenient numeric display that, with two button presses on-load, shows remaining camera run-time in hours and minutes. The display maintains accuracy by tracking cell-performance and adjusting calibration values to compensate for cell-aging. When batteries are linked, the run-time figure given is for the entire stack, but a single button press shows individual battery capacity as a percentage.

Mo-Sys gives movie camera operators new tools for precise control of new generation camera gimbals with the new Drone-Bar

Spectacular aerial cinematography got much better in the past two years, as more and more directors and DOP’s have discovered the potential of radio controlled drones as camera platforms. ‘Copters carrying an under-slung gyro-stabilized gimbal to mount a range of cameras, challenge traditional  helicopters and camera cranes on price and can produce unique, stunning shots impossible with either..  Gimbals are also being mounted in small, light, hand-held units, taking the camera on a journey never before seen with body mounted Steadicams.

The radio controlled gimbal gives the camera its pan, tilt and roll movement, but controlling these has until now been awkward for operators used to working with film equipment such as fluid heads or geared heads with wheels. Gimbals on drones are usually operated with controllers more appropriate for model aircraft enthusiasts and just don’t have the precision and smooth operation film camera operators are used to and expect.

Now Mo-Sys Technologies, creators of the world renown Lamda head, recently used on Life of PI and Gravity, have applied their specialist expertise in remote camera control systems to give operators the same smooth, precise control over the latest generation of camera gimbals. The Drone-Bar was designed by Mo-Sys Technologies in collaboration with Cartoni, renown for their fluid drag technology which gives the pan bar a very professional feel.

The Drone-Bar looks like a regular pan and tilt fluid head, but with a HD monitor where the camera would go.  It is an adjustable, fluid damped head with the finest movement in any direction captured by high resolution, precision encoders and sent direct to the gimbal via the on-board transmitter.  Adjustable smoothing ensures zero jerkiness throughout the camera movement. Soft stops can be set to restrict the camera movement to avoid for example getting propellers or landing gear of ‘copters in the frame. Adjustable ramping allows smooth deceleration towards the soft stops.

The Drone-Bar can also be used with gimbals mounted in hand held units. This is the revolutionary concept of a small camera mounted in a lightweight unit easily carried in one hand by one operator, while a second operator controls the pan and tilt with the Drone-Bar.

Rock steady pictures with the freedom to go anywhere and an unlimited range of movement open up a new world of easily achievable, stunning visuals at a fraction of the cost of other hand held systems. Just pick it up and shoot!

The Drone-Bar is compatible with most radio-controlled gimbals including the MōVI from Freefly, and is supplied with a compatible transmitter. Mo-Sys Technologies will also soon release its hand-wheel technology for the use with remote camera gimbals.

Mo-Sys announces the Exim Head, the high capacity Gyro-Stabilized head with the feather-like touch

Mo-Sys’ family of precision products for film production are designed and built to give directors and DOP’s the tools to create new and imaginative imagery. Our remote controlled heads have been used on many major feature films including recently Life of Pi and Gravity, and are preferred by camera operators and grips for their strength, responsiveness and immediacy.

Our latest addition is the  Exim G60 designed in response to operator’s demands for a high load capacity head perfect for gyro stabilization and maintains Mo-Sys’ reputation as manufacturers of high precision, responsive remote heads.

The heavy duty Exim G60 is gyro-stabilized with zero backlash and ultra-responsive drive units. It features large through-holes in the centre of each drive unit eliminating the need for slip rings. Designed with heavyweight camera packages in mind, the cradle is adjustable to carry all regularly used cameras up to a maximum payload of 60 kg making it perfect for 3D rigs and Imax cameras. The design of the cradle also makes it possible to pan left and right, even with the camera pointing directly downwards.

The Exim G60 is controlled with its highly intuitive touch screen console and with traditional pan bar, joy stick or hand-wheels inputs. Motion data can be exported for use in VFX post-production and for pre-vis compositing with Mo-Sys’ on-set compositing system Genie. The Exim G60 also features recordable and repeatable camera moves as standard.

The Exim G60 is a first fully digital high capacity gyro-stabilized head you can buy.

Ianiro announces its new Gulliver light

Ianiro’s new portable and fully dimmable Gulliver LED is a small 40W unit available in AC or DC versions. With the same diminutive proportions as the classic halogen light, the new Gulliver offers all the advantages of LED technology.

“With this new unit, we have delivered a product that does not fall into the usual LED traps. It’s designed to perform to a high level over its entire lifespan and to maintain a consistent output throughout a shoot, with no change in color response,” said Fabrizia Ianiro.

Gulliver LED is designed for use in small studios and on location. As such, it is lightweight and durable making it suitable for news and documentary reporters.

The small size of the unit posed particular challenges to the design team. To keep operating temperatures at acceptable levels, the casing was designed as a radiator, with near-invisible vents throughout. The internal heat sink was made to measure from anti-corrosion aluminum, very different from an ordinary commercial extruded component. The aluminum casing was optimized to facilitate heat dispersion.

The same attention to focus is evident with the mirrors, which are printed on ultra-pure time-tested aluminum by a German company, which is a leader in the field. For Gulliver, as with all Ianiro products, a special diffusing finish is made with great precision to give the light the right balance between softness and high luminance.

This emphasis on quality engineering extends to the choice of individual LEDs, which are carefully selected and calibrated for professional television applications. The bulb arrangement and internal circuitry was also specified by Ianiro’s research and development team in order to ensure suitability for professional video use.

“Because of our precise LED arrays and custom-designed heatsinks”, notes Fabrizia Ianiro, “the dreaded color shift (LED color deviation) is not an issue. These factors, plus LED bulb quality, means that the unit has excellent heat dissipation.
This makes a real difference compared to standard products.” Gulliver LED is compatible with all existing accessories and is available from authorised resellers now.

Ianiro announces a major addition to its LED line up with the arrival of the red head-style Varibeam LED

The red head has been the mainstay fixture for lighting interviews in the studio and in the field. Three units can easily pack into a shoulder bag, allowing high quality multi-point lighting to be set up quickly in any location. With dimmers,  cost-effective filters, soft boxes and reflectors, crews have enjoyed complete control and great results from portable red head lights for decades.

Despite concerns over heat and power requirements, traditional red heads have remained highly popular, with newer lighting technologies struggling to truly replace tungsten’s bright output and excellent colour characteristics. Now, Ianiro delivers a real alternative, with the launch of the 7000 Varibeam LED series.

Critically, Varibeam Led provides an excellent light source, with a CQS suitable to film shooting. Fabrizia Ianiro remarked:

“The Ianiro tungsten red head is famous: the range goes back to the 1960s so we were not willing to tarnish the reputation of the company by releasing immature LED technology. With the Varibeam LED, there’s no compromise whatsoever; the photometrics are quite outstanding. The light output is phenomenal delivering up-to 1388 lux at 2 metres while the dimmer operates with virtually no colour shift at all.”

These new redhead units deliver the distinctive compact design and traditional light weight build, as well as all the usual benefits of red head lights. They also embrace energy saving, thanks to a high-efficiency, exclusive long-life LED array and a special heatsink, customized by Ianiro to exploit the limited space inside the casing. The units incorporate an extra-pure, uniformly calibrated aluminum mirror, tailored for use with LEDs. Ianiro’s attention to details means that the light’s performance is indistinguishable from a tungsten unit.

“The LED is not just more comfortable for the talent under the light but is easier for the crew to use: it’s cooler, more economical and more durable. With standard AC and 12v DC units available, we can also give producers more flexibility than
ever.” Said Fabrizia.

Radiant Images to Unveil Novo 2K – a Novo that Shoots Uncompressed RAW – at Cine Gear Expo this Weekend

Digital cinema innovator also showcasing original palm-sized Novo action camera, a new iPhone/iPad app, the new Alexa XT, custom rigs and other forward-thinking gear in Booth S309

LOS ANGELES (May 29, 2013) – Radiant Images, a leading L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator, will unveil an updated Novo action camera that shoots uncompressed RAW – called the Novo 2K – in Exhibition Booth S309 at the Cine Gear Expo.

Radiant Images (www.radiantimages.com) also will showcase its original palm-sized Novo action camera and the new ARRI Alexa XT, release a new iPhone and iPad app to search and compare cameras, and share an array of custom 2D and 3D rigs and gear at Cine Gear 2013 at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood. The Radiant Images booth, located in Stage 31, will be staffed from 2-9 p.m. on Fri., May 31 and from 10-5 p.m. on Sat., June 1.

The Cine Gear Expo, an annual four-day conference, is the premier film, video and digital media expo for the entertainment industry, attracting the most dedicated specialists from every major department of the entertainment production and post production world.

Radiant Images is focused on simplicity and ease of use in its digital cinema creations, which are attracting attention from a loyal and growing number of cinematographers, camera operators and producers. Co-founder Michael Mansouri and his team are known to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema with creative, user-friendly solutions – specializing in designing and building custom 2D and 3D rigs as well as modifying cameras and gear.

“We feel like we’re moving in the opposite direction of where everybody else is going with digital cinema,” Mansouri said. “At Radiant Images, we’re lasered in on simplicity in design and operation, ease of use, small form factor, versatility. It’s a new language of cinema and we are helping artists express themselves and achieve their vision with these new, uncomplicated tools.”

The Novo digital cinema camera – the entertainment industry’s newest small form factor action camera – is a prime example.

Co-created by View Factor Studios and Radiant Images, the lens-friendly Novo (www.novocamera.com) is viewed as an ideal solution for professional filmmakers enamored with the capabilities of the GoPro Hero3 but stymied by cinematic limitations.

Key features of the Novo include a C-mount lens system plus a PL mount adapter, back focus adjustment, and exposure control capabilities that open up a wide-range of artistic possibilities for cinematographers and camera operators. The auto exposure function standard with the GoPro can be disabled on the Novo, permitting cinematographers to use the lens to manually adjust the aperture. The Novo achieves this while retaining all the key functionality, versatility and accessories of the GoPro Hero 3.

The tiny Novo, released in February, won a MARIO Award for innovation at NAB 2013. The camera is available for rental only at Radiant Images in the U.S. and new European rental partner P+S Technik.

This weekend at Cine Gear, Radiant Images will unveil an updated version called the Novo 2K. By shooting 2K uncompressed RAW, the Novo 2K enables filmmakers to have full control of latitude, exposure and color renditions, for example, giving them another powerful tool at their disposal.

Radiant Images also is one of the first companies to receive delivery of the new ARRI Alexa XT (Xtended Technology) cameras. Its Alexa XT Plus model will be on display at Cine Gear, giving visitors an up-close look at one of 2013’s most anticipated pieces of equipment, which will eventually replace all Alexa models.

Radiant Images techs will be on hand in Booth S309 (Stage 31) to demonstrate and discuss the Novo and Novo 2K and a wide range of other custom equipment, including the user-friendly CC3D Gen-2 lightweight rig outfitted with twin Sony F65s – used on a Steadicam for the first-time ever on a recent 3D IMAX production in Panama.

Legendary designer Marty Mueller of Converging Concepts worked closely with Radiant Images to create a CC3D Gen-2 rigthat carried two full-sized production cameras, lens, lens control, motors and brackets, yet was light and well-balanced enough to work on a Steadicam – marking a step forward in 3D production.

In addition, visitors to the Radiant Images booth will be able to demo and download a new iOS application created by Radiant Images and compatible with both iPhone and iPad. The free, fully-featured app allows users – including cinematographers, directors, camera assistants and operators, lens techs and producers – to intuitively browse inventory, searching by category, keywords or alpha.

The new app contains non-biased, detailed information about all available production cameras, including a range of camera specs – sensor size, resolution, frame rate, base ISO, latitude, bit rate, recording format, recording time, weight and dimension – plus numerous photos of each product. A 360-degree panorama view is available for select products.

As an organizational tool, the app allows users to set up an infinite number of “projects” (similar to ‘shopping carts’) and switch between them, adding items to whichever project they chose and then submitting for a price quote. The app will be available through the App Store beginning May 31.

“We’re excited about this new app as it fits into our philosophy of simplicity, accessibility and ease of use for our clients,” Mansouri said. “This tool puts tons of information at their fingertips to help them compare cameras and lenses and make informed choices.”

Featuring much smaller thin-film transistors (TFTs) as compared to conventional displays, IGZO technology also significantly increases the amount of light transmitted per pixel. As a result, these advanced displays portray vibrant and crisp content with the ability to zoom in to examine the detail of a picture or text, or pan out to view content from a wider angle. This can help boost operational efficiency by sparing users the need to scroll frequently.

Combining Sharp’s IGZO technology with a brilliant white, edge lit LED backlight system, these state-of-the-art monitors measure only 35 millimeters at their thickest point (that’s less than an inch and a half), making them the industry’s thinnest design in their class.

The series consists of two 32” class (31.5” diagonal) displays that are differentiated by touch capability. One of the two models features 10-point multi-touch capability utilizing advanced projected capacitive technology. Its intuitive design is easy to use with either your fingers or the included stylus that enables precision, accuracy and smooth handwriting.

Outfitted with two HDMI® ports and one DisplayPort interface which are both capable of using a single connector cable in order to transmit an ultra-high resolution signal, helping to simplify cable management and reduce desktop clutter. Backed by Sharp’s 3-year limited warranty, both models support landscape and portrait orientation and are designed for 24/7 operation.

Meet the Novo, the New Lens-Friendly Action Camera Made for the Cinema

The entertainment industry’s newest small form factor digital cinema camera appearing at Cine Gear Expo in Radiant Images Booth S309

LOS ANGELES (April 25, 2013) – The Novo, the new lens-friendly action camera that removes the cinematic limitations of the GoPro Hero3 for professional filmmakers, will be on display in the Radiant Images booth at the upcoming Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood.

Attendees who visit Booth S309 will get an up-close look and hands-on demonstration of the tiny camera that is making a big impression on cinematographers throughout the industry. The palm-sized Novo, winner of a coveted MARIO Award for innovation at NAB in Las Vegas, is viewed as an ideal solution for filmmakers enamored with the capabilities of the GoPro Hero3 but stymied by cinematic limitations.

The Novo features base ISO 640 and 11 stops of dynamic range.

Radiant Images, an L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator, collaborated on the design and function of the Novo with creator View Factor Studios. The Novo (www.novocamera.com) is available for rent only, exclusively at Radiant Images in the U.S. and through its rental partner in Europe, P+S Technik.

“Our goal is to help cinematographers achieve their vision without compromise,” said Michael Mansouri, co-founder of Radiant Images. “The Novo is an important new tool for that purpose.”

The Novo’s lightweight aluminum housing is 20 percent thinner than the GoPro Hero3, fits into the palm of a hand, and includes three bottom and two front 1/4-20 mounting points. Also, four buttons on the front (REC, PWR, WiFi & AUX) are assignable to several functions depending on the application. The Aux button turns the auto exposure on/off, but can also be utilized for other functions, such as digital zoom.

The Novo offers these enhanced cinematic features while also retaining the GoPro Hero3: Black Edition’s key functionality and accessories, such as the LCD touch screen, power backpack and WiFi connectivity for wireless camera control. Like the GoPro, the Novo shoots cinema-quality 2K and 4K resolution.

High speed rotate
We often get asked to go around a subject at high speed. This month we were asked to create a high speed rig for a client wanting to go at over 5m/s (16/sec) around a subject while filming with a high speed Olympus i-Speed camera. Additionally they wanted to be able to go around and around and not have to worry about cables tangling. We created what was needed and the results were pretty jaw-dropping so we thought wed put some of the test footage online.

Standard off-the-shelf rental dolly rail was used and special dolly wheels were used to grip onto to the rail to stop the dolly from flying off due to centrifugal forces. Even so, everything including the rail had to be heavily weighed down to ensure nothing tried to move off during the high speed motion.

Online Motion Control Shop Now OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Some users may have noticed a new addition to our website last month. www.mrmoco.com/shop is our new online shop. Its only a small taster of whats to come, but we thought wed start by putting on some of our popular smaller products online, for users to buy directly from the website. It includes the more standard configurations of our small pan-tilt heads and sliders for motion control and time-lapse, including various controllers. Its only a tiny portion of what we do, and buyers are always welcome to ask about customizations for their specific applications. It also calculates UPS shipping costs although for large orders it is best to get a direct quotation for shipping. More content will be added shortly, but you will find some interesting items on there.

Pro8mm of Burbank, CA launches a weekly pod cast commencing January 9, 2013 that compliments their new division, Home Movie Legacy, www.homemovielegacy.com

The Home Movie Legacy Project will air live on Wednesdays at 4PM Pacific Time (7EST) with your host, Rhonda Vigeant (author of GET “REEL” ABOUT YOUR HOME MOVIE LEGACY…Before It’s too Late!) If you are the family historian passionate about preserving and sharing family films, a filmmaker wanting to use legacy or found footage in a documentary, a wedding or life-style filmmaker wanting to include super 8 film in your work, a production manager looking to incorporate Super 8 film in a current project, a genealogy buff, memory keeper, or archivist, this show is for you!

Rhonda will draw upon her many years of running Pro8mm, a company known worldwide as being the Super 8 experts for production and legacy footage. Pro8mm has developed proprietary technology for the entertainment industry to use Super 8 film in today’s most popular television shows (American Idol, The New Normal, The Neighbors, American Horror Story), theatrical releases (Argo, Super 8, The Fighter) and dozens of music videos and commercials for national brands.  Over 3 decades they have   worked on thousands of super 8 and 16mm projects for the entertainment industry, and have handled millions of feet of film to archive the legacies of the world’s most famous faces. They have digitized historical material for hundreds of documentaries, as well as Presidential Libraries, and Museums.

Some shows will focus on compelling interviews with people who are sharing their personal story using home movies from the past and the present, sharing what was discovered, what was challenged or what was confirmed. Other shows will feature technical content with guest speakers that will teach you how to best move your analog media into your digital life, including how to organize it, repurpose it, share it on social media, or monetize it for a wider audience. A filmmaker forum segment featuring Phil Vigeant, President of Pro8mm, and author of The Power of Super8 Film: Insider Secrets Every Filmmaker Should Know, (Rhonda’s business partner, husband and tech guru) will be routinely included to help you learn what the entertainment industry does with their digital assets, tips on how to become head of your own personal studio, and why filmmakers can and should continue to shoot on film in a ‘digital world.’ Home Movie Legacy isn’t just about grandpa’s old home movies. The term is all-inclusive and casts a wide net on the past, present and future independent filmmaking.

Rhonda is completely passionate about the value of home movies and educating people how to best care for and share them.

“Everyone has a legacy and Home Movies are a living, recorded history of our lives, our family, our community, relationships, celebrations, the way we looked, dressed, and interacted. If a picture is worth a thousand words than a home movie must be worth a million. No where else can we rekindle those moments of times gone by or see ourselves interacting with our loved ones who have passed away. It jolts the memory with such a strong emotion in a way that nothing else can. My life’s work has been dedicated to the belief that not only is it important to see these images, but it is equally as important to preserve them with integrity for future generations so your family legacy on film lives! My show will be a call to action to GET “REEL” ABOUT YOUR HOME MOVIE LEGACY…. BEFORE It’s TOO LATE!”, while enjoying stories about the masses and the moguls who launched their careers by shooting home movies on film and continue to make it a vital part of their professional work today.

New PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 Models — Plus New PL Lenses, Battery, RAW recorder, Viewfinders,
and Recording Media — Expand Sony’s Line of End-to-End 4K Acquisition Solutions
PARK RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 30, 2012 – Sony Electronics is unveiling two new CineAlta™ 4K cameras,
complemented by a full line of new accessories. The new cameras – models F55 and F5 – have a
modular and compact design for easy configuration, and each features a new type of 4K Super
35mm image sensor with a 4096 x 2160 resolution (11.6M total pixels).
“These two new models join a family of Sony large-sensor cameras that complement each
other and deliver powerful new capabilities to professionals working at every level of production,”
said Rob Willox, director of marketing for large image sensor cameras at Sony Electronics. “They fill
a critical gap in large-sensor acquisition between Sony’s PMW-F3 camcorder and F65 digital
motion picture camera, and give content creators new levels of flexibility and creative options for
acquisition and production in HD, 2K, 4K and beyond. The total line-up, with our new accessories,
further underscores Sony’s commitment to supporting every aspect of the highest-quality
professional workflows.”
New F65 features and future upgrades
The 20-megapixel F65 remains the flagship of Sony’s large sensor acquisition technology.
The 8K sensor-equipped F65 continues to evolve, with new features designed to keep it at the
highest end of professional digital imaging. The most recent feature add-on (Ver2.0) includes a
new high frame rate mode for 8K 16-bit Linear RAW recording at 120P to deliver stunning 4K
images with super smooth slow motion capabilities, as well as the SR codec updated to 12-bit. The
Ver2.0 upgrade was also released for Sony’s SRR4 recorder, as well as the SRPC4 transfer station to
enable 1.5 times faster than real-time transfer speed of 8K 16-bit linear RAW files. Future
upgrades to the F65 will deliver higher than 4K RGB resolution, paint and remote control, and
interfacing with the new OLED viewfinder, among other features strongly desired by the
production community. Click here for more F65 information.
New F55 and F5 Cameras
The new CineAlta 4K cameras deliver unprecedented creative options for HD, 2K QFHD
and 4K production. Both offer multi-codec support: Sony’s new XAVC MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format,
the SR codec (MPEG4 SStP), and the well-established XDCAM 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec. In-camera
recording is to Sony’s new SxS PRO+ memory card media (for the F55, 4K 60p:422 10-bit XAVC and
HD 422 10-bit XAVC High Frame Rate); and for the F5, HD XAVC and HD high frame rate).
The F55 can connect to Sony’s new 4K 30-inch LCD monitor, model PVM-X300, using four
3G-SDI interfaces for live monitoring at 4096×2160 up to 60p while recording XAVC 4K and
playback XAVC 4K images. Users can connect directly to Sony’s new 84-inch BRAVIA 4K (3840×2160) LED TV for largescreen
monitoring of the camera’s 4K 60P images (at resized horizontal resolution of 3860 pixels).
Using Sony’s new RAW recorder “AXS-R5,” enhanced high frame rate capabilities allow
shooters to capture super slow-motion imagery in up to 60p 4K RAW on new AXS memory — for
2K RAW, up to 240fps** with the F55; and up to 120 fps**with the F5 — all without crop factor or
loss of angle of view. The F55 adds a global shutter to eliminate rolling shutter skew and flash band, delivering
the same color filter with ultra wide color gamut as the F65 for true color reproduction. The
cameras are further distinguished by wide (14 stops) exposure latitude, high sensitivity, and low
noise. Unique to both the F55 and F5 will be the ability to dual record in a number of different
configurations depending upon codec selection and whether using the optional AXS-R5 RAW
recorder. Combinations will include recording in parallel to a single SxSPro+ card, to both SxS slots
with the same or different codecs, and recording to SxS at the same time as to the AXS-R5 in RAW.
These powerful features enable highly efficient off line, on line workflows and the archiving and
repurposing of the RAW data.
New PL Lens System – The Second Generation
The F55 and F5 cameras continue Sony’s efforts to offer the most flexible lens options. PLmount
prime cine lens technology lets users choose cine optics from Angénieux, Canon, Carl Zeiss,
Cooke, FUJIFILM, Leica, Schneider Optics and others.
New PL-mount prime lenses
Representing Sony’s second generation of cost-effective PL mount prime lenses, each is
certified for 4K capture, and designed to minimize geometric distortion, vignetting and breathing.
A nine-blade iris delivers beautiful bokehs and the focus rings rotate 240 degrees. The new lens
series includes focal lengths of 20, 25, 35, 50, 85 and 135 mm. For easy lens changes, each has the
same T2.0 aperture, the same external diameter, matte box diameter, and gear locations for
follow focus and aperture. All are the same height except for the 135 mm lens.
Shooters can use still lenses by removing the supplied PL-mount adaptor to reveal the
native FZ mount. This makes it easy to accept commercially available adaptors for third-party
lenses, including Canon® EF, Canon FD, Nikon® DX, Nikon G, Leica® M and even 2/3-inch broadcast
B4 lenses. A third option is the use of Sony FZ-Mount lenses with auto focus servo zoom (model
New Digital Viewfinders
Using a new digital interface, F5 and F55 users can take advantage of a new series of highquality
OLED and LCD viewfinders. The DVF-EL100 measures 0.7-inches with 1280 x 720 HD
resolution, superb brightness, contrast and response. DVF-EL100 viewfinder DVF-L700 viewfinder DVF-L350 viewfinder
The DVF-L350 3.5-inch LCD viewfinder offers 10 times the contrast of previous Sony LCD
viewfinders, with a flip-up eyepiece for direct monitoring. A third option is the full HD DVF-L700.
This compact 7-inch LCD viewfinder enables high resolution when shooting in 2K and 4K, with
pixel- to-pixel 1920 x 1080 representation of HD images.
New RAW Recording System
Sony is also unveiling the AXSM™ Access Memory System for 2K*/4K RAW recording,
based on Sony’s unique recording technology. Optimized for this new platform is the AXSM
memory card (512 GB capacity, model AXS-512S24), using the generic file system exFAT which
mounts on PC or Mac systems without requiring a driver. Users can record 4K RAW data up to 60
fps and 2K RAW up to 240 fps**, with a 300MB/s sustained transfer speed. PC-friendly operation is
enabled with the AXS-CR1 card reader, offering a USB 3.0 interface for 2x high speed transfer.
AXSM™ memory card AXS-R5 RAW recorder
Additionally, the new AXS-R5 RAW recorder directly docks onto the F5 and F55, for an
extremely elegant and compact recording solution for 2K** and 4K RAW recording. The AXS-R5
RAW is also the 4K RAW recorder for the NEX-FS700U/UK camcorder via the new interface
adapter HXR-IFR5.
New SxS Recording Media
The cameras support Sony’s new high-speed, enhanced versions of its SxS PRO memory
cards: the SxS PRO+ series (in 128 and 64 GB capacities, models SBP-128B and SBP-64B).
Sony SxS PRO+ memory cards Based on the proven and reliable memory card technology widely used in Sony’s XDCAM
EX camcorders, the new cards support XAVC 4K and XAVC HD high frame rate recording, and can
be directly inserted into the cameras.
New Battery and Charger
The F5 and F55 cameras take advantage of Sony’s new BP-FL75 battery pack, which uses
Olivine—Lithium Iron Phosphate—instead of conventional Lithium Ion cathodes. The result is a
substantial increase in charge-discharge cycles, compared to previous Sony batteries. The Olivine
battery works with Sony’s BC-L90 quick charger. The new battery supports outstanding mobility
for field shooting, enabling two times higher-speed charging than current chargers and a
