Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Laszlo Kovacs, ASC, and Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, in the United States as political refugees from Hungary. They had made a harrowing escape from their native land in the wake of the brutal suppression of an uprising against the communist regime in October, 1956. Kovacs and Zsigmond arrived in the U.S. with the dream of becoming cinematographers in Hollywood. The odds were heavily stacked against them, but they became two of the most influential cinematographers in film history. James Chressanthis, ASC, artfully blended some 50 interviews with Kovacs, Zsigmond, their families, actors, actresses, directors, and film critics with compelling clips from some of their classic films into an 90 minute documentary to tell the story of their friendship and achievements. This seminar will discuss the anatomy of the making of this remarkable documentary.  “No Subtitles Necessary:  Laszlo and Vilmos” premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival on May 22 in the Classic category.
