In this conversation, award-winning photographer Phil Caruso takes us behind-the-scenes of his career shooting stills on-set of some of the greatest films of all time — movies including A Bronx Tale, Cape Fear, Casino, and Forrest Gump, plus TV series such as “Poker Face” and “White House Plumbers.” Phil will also share his perspectives on the art of on-set photography, and shooting with both analog and digital technologies. This conversation will include an exclusive slideshow and audience Q&A.

Phil’s introduction to photography & film was at the age of 8 when he became the projectionist to his family’s screening room of 16mm films. His father worked as a cameraman, writer, and producer of documentaries, then features in the 1950s. He had an inventory of motion picture and still photographic equipment that Phil discovered. Phil first began use a 16mm camera at age 10 followed with a still camera, a Leica M3.

Phil’s film production experience began with the formation of his own production company, CINECO PRODUCTIONS, in New Orleans in 1969. He self-produced documentaries on the sugar cane industry, the New Orleans tourism industry, and commercials for agency and clients in the Southeast. Working as cameraman and editor, he worked on independent feature productions where crew members expanded their jobs from production to post-production jobs. Continuing as cameraman and production manager for other studios in New Orleans, he worked a schedule of political campaigns and retail commercials. In 1983, he was accepted into IATSE Local 666 in Chicago as a still photographer to begin union employment. He continued to work and relocate geographically to obtain cards from camera locals in Los Angeles and New York.

He began work for Ron Howard at the time he formed Imagine Entertainment for the movie Parenthood. While working Backdraft, he was asked to become the on-call photographer to Robert De Niro. Bob introduced him to Martin Scorsese on the filming of Cape Fear and continued to work on over 20 movies total for both Bob and Marty.

Claudia Raschke is a world renown cinematographer, best known for her ability to bring rich tones of the motion picture to a diverse spectrum of films, from purely commercial ventures, through feature-length documentaries, to lower-budget works of art. Among her many notable award-winning films are: Oscar-nominated RBG, God is the bigger Elvis, My Architect, Small Wonder, and Sister Rose’s Passion; Oscar-short-listed Mad Hot Ballroom and Julia; Peabody Award-winning Black Magic and My Name Is Pauli Murray as well as documentary series for Nat Geo, Discovery, Showtime and CNN. Her most recently released feature documentaries are Yours in Freedom, Bill Baird and the biography film of Loie Fuller titled Obsessed with Light. Currently Claudia is in production of an eight-part documentary series for the History channel to be released Spring of 2025.

David Leitner is an Oscar-nominated producer, director, and Emmy-nominated cinematographer with over a hundred credits in full-length dramas and documentaries including eight Sundance premieres. From 1977-1985 he was Director of New Technology at New York’s legendary DuArt Film & Video, responsible for innovations in optical printing, cine lens testing, film-to-tape transfer and Super 16. He was also a long-time contributing editor (Millimeter, Filmmaker) and industry consultant on camera design. Currently he serves as a board member of IndieCollect and is a Fellow of the SMPTE. He remains an active DP.

Ashwin Gandbhir has over two decades of experience in long and short form film and television as an editor, producer, and writer. His most current work focuses on social justice movements and sports in the United States. Most recently, he was the finishing editor for Eyes on the Prize 3 for HBO. Prior to that, Ashwin edited Dynasty for Apple TV, which chronicles the New England Patriots years under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. In 2022, Ashwin edited Sam Pollard’s Bill Russell: Legend, the comprehensive doc on the basketball and civil rights icon. Other recent work includes the multiple award-winning Black and Missing, directed by Geeta Gandbhir for HBO and D.Wade: Life Unexpected for ESPN. Prior to that, Ashwin produced and edited One Nation Under Stress and the Cinema Eye winning Baltimore Rising, both for HBO. Ashwin’s work as lead pilot editor was instrumental in creating CNN’s The Wonderlist. Unforgiven, a short documentary on voter suppression he co-directed for Time Magazine in 2016, received two Green Eyeshade awards.

Arielle Amsalem is an Emmy Award winning documentary editor. Her work has aired on HBO, Showtime, PBS, AMC, and Vice, among others. In 2010, Arielle was awarded the Primetime Emmy for Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming for By the People: The Election of Barack Obama. Other award-winning films include Comedy Warriors (Television Academy Honors Award) and Black and Missing (Independent Spirit Award and NAACP Image award). She has worked as a producer, editor, and a consultant bringing her strong storytelling skills to each and every project.
